Artist: Beefcake Title: Viande de Gâteau Label: Delikatessen Records Catalog #: Plate 9 Release date: April 2004 Tracklisting a1. gv-001-2003 a2. gv-002-2003 b1. gv-003-2003 b2. gv-004-2003 "YES!! We're both ace carnivores! Vitamin F & B plus proteins, which means: it's good for your brain!” – Beefcake It’s the start of 2004, so Delikatessen is sharpening its cleavers on a fat new slab of meaty beats! That’s right, we’ve got four fresh new cuts from none other than Germany’s Beefcake, the illustrious duo of Gabor Schablitzki and Volker Kahl, who’ve been slicing and dicing choice electronic and IDM selections since 1997. The first track is a top sirloin cut, cooked well-done on the outside with crispy fractured beat slivers, but which opens up to a juicy medium-rare atmospheric melody that delights with its supple sonic texture. While only a 3-minute portion, the second track is a veritable filet mignon of a cut, where lightly rhythmatized ambience melts like butter in your ears, note after succulent note. But if the second track is the most tender cut on Viande de Gâteau, then the third track is a thundering 72-oz T-bone steak, beginning as it does with a blistering outtake from an old symphony mash-up record Volker found on eBay before sinewy breakbeats tenderize its bullish flavor. The fourth and final offering on the menu is a tasty little shish kebab of a track, where a funky-flavored downtempo groove pokes around firm synth tones that will whet your appetite for more of Beefcake’s choice electronic cuts. You’ll need a stack of napkins and a bevy of toothpicks to finish Delikatessen’s fine Plate no. 9! About the Chefs: Gabor and Volker have been butchering beats as Beefcake since their first 12-inch on Hymen in 1997. Stylistically, Beefcake has been closely linked to fellow Deutschlanders Funkstörung, thanks in large part to Beefcake’s unflappable consistency in turning out razor-sharp music formed from prime cuts of digital glitch artifacts and a healthy dose of industrial spice. But make no mistake, these two chefs are more apt to juggle fresh beef ribs back and forth than get on the hunt to electronic pop stardom. For starters, says Gabor and Volker, who met during a flute-playing class, say that their intention for the name Beefcake is actually a compound recipe where the beef is “rhythm and mustard” while the cake is “melody with sugar on top!” And despite the duo’s deft ability with electronic sound design, they say they’re more influenced by “cheesy 70’s pop, traditional folk, and solo trumpet music.” With side projects such as Wighnomy Brothers (deep and tech house) and solo DJ work, Gabor and Volker are constantly plying their special culinary sound talents to satisfy appetites all over the world. Delikatessen is proud to have Beefcake make a stop in the shop with such a nice pack of new music! About the Deli: Delikatessen opened its first shops in the US and Germany in 2002, and its owners are proud to offer up the best in electronic, experimental, and wicked-bad sonic foodstuffs this side of a piece of vinyl. Delikatessen promises each Plate will be chock-full of all the delicious electronics your turntable can handle, and that the choons will fill you up like Thanksgiving at grandma’s.
