This is a reminder about the Feedback Monitor/CIUT fundraising event taking place this Saturday, March 27th at The Drake Hotel in Toronto. The full details appear below, but first, a few words of warning: If you're planning on coming, you should try and show up fairly early, as the Underground at The Drake has a strictly enforced capacity of 150 people. Stragglers and dilly-dalliers may find themselves turned away if we hit the limit. Plus you won't want to miss a minute of the groovy tunes! Also, if you arrive and find a large line up on the street in front of The Drake, ignore it and walk right in. That will be the queue to get into the main floor lounge, which is apparently the hot place to see & be seen right now. You'll want to head through the lobby to the stairs at the back of the hotel and head down to the Underground. Hope to see you there! ----- FEEDBACK MONITOR FUNDRAISER a night of electronic music in support of the CIUT 89.5 FM Spring fundraising drive Live: LOWFISH (Suction Records) QUASIMOJO (Mira Records) HYPNOTECH 3 (FuturSonic) DJs: LEX (Legion of Green Men) SOLVENT (Suction Records) GREG CLOW (Feedback Monitor) Saturday, March 27th, 2004 The Underground at The Drake Hotel 1150 Queen Street West, Toronto $10 at the door - doors open at 9 PM - 19+ http://www.feedbackmonitor.com http://www.ciut.fm http://www.thedrakehotel.ca ---------- LOWFISH Lowfish is the musical guise of Gregory De Rocher. Raised on substantial doses of industrial music (Skinny Puppy, Nitzer Ebb) and early melodic electronica (Aphex Twin, early Warp records output), Lowfish now finds himself an influential international player in both the worlds of electro and electronica. In addition to releasing material on his own Suction Records (the label he owns and operates in partnership with Jason Amm, aka Solvent), he has recorded for a variety of renowned electronic labels from around the world including Ersatz Audio (Detroit), Morr Music (Berlin), Ghostly International (Ann Arbor), City Centre Offices (Manchester), Awkward Silence (London) and A.D.S.R. (Berlin). Lowfish has also brought his unique brand of "drum machine electro-pop" to the stage, both solo and in tandem with Solvent, alongside names like Tiga, Adult., Legowelt, and 2 Many DJs. His latest release is the critically acclaimed album 1000 Corrections Per Second (Suction), and upcoming releases include a Lowfish/Solvent collaborative EP called Power Failure on Holland's Vynlogica label, and a solo 12" on a yet to be named label. http://www.lowfish.ca http://www.suctionrecords.com ---------- QUASIMOJO As though operating from a venn diagram of the sprawling, broken kingdoms of indie rock, and the desolate tundra of abrasive electronic esoterica, QuasiMojo's sound is at once elaborate, high-production-value soundscape, and flawed, intimate, and human. Vocalist Maureen Spillane brings a human element to the work, oscillating between sweet sighs and burlesque belting - and the addition of multi-instrumentalist Locksley Taylor (also of Toronto space-rock outfit Sianspheric) adds an expansive, lilting quality to the chugging, clicking and whirring backdrops of kick'n'click laid down by Dean Williams. The end result is something that when expressed physically, might resemble a Lego sculpture made out of organic matter - perfectly pieced together, yet just barely managing not to fall apart - both perfect, and wrecked, at once - music that owes as much spiritually to the enchanted churnings of the shoegaze era as it does to the catch-all IDM umbrella. You can hear the love put into this music at first listen - and it *will* win you over as well. This is cheerfully genre-bending music that calls you the next day, just to say that it had as good a time as you did. File under "Uneasy Listening". http://www.chillproductions.com/quasimojo/ http://www.mirarecords.de/ ---------- HYPNOTECH 3 Asked to describe their music, John Merall and Michael Jackson Pawluk of Hamilton's ambient-pulsebeat duo Hypnotech 3 enigmatically reply: "Edgar Froese and Brian Eno were walking down the street one day, when suddenly the universe imploded into a singularity. At this point things began to get interesting. Richard Amp and Jens Agren, who were watching this all happen, were heard to remark 'you know, that would make for a really good album.'" http://www.soundclick.com/hypnotech3 http://www.futursonic.com/ ---------- DJ LEX While he may be best known for his work as one-half of Legion Of Green Men (and their numerous side-projects including Alkahest, Empirical Sleeping Consort and Zeuxis & The Painted Grapes), Lex Addicus is also an active DJ who appears frequently at numerous events in and around Toronto. Expect him to bring a deep, spacey, dubby & funky vibe to the evening - and maybe even some dub plates of upcoming LOGM material... http://www.postcontemporary.net ---------- SOLVENT Jason Amm aka Solvent doesn't do live DJ sets very often, but when he does, he generally throws down the sort of dirty electro and new wave nuggets that you would expect based on his own musical productions, such as the "Radio Ga-Ga" double EP set recently released by Ghostly International. But for this event, Amm will be showing his mellower side and will open the night with a special set focussing on more abstract and ambient sounds. http://www.suctionrecords.com ---------- GREG CLOW Greg Clow is the host of Feedback Monitor, a weekly radio program (Tuesdays at 10 PM on CIUT 89.5 FM) that has recently entered its ninth year of presenting the best in electronic and experimental music to listeners in Toronto and beyond. Along with his wife, Sheryl Kirby, he runs a tiny record label called Piehead Records, and occassionally presents live events under the name Stained Productions. He is a closet hockey fan (Go Leafs Go!), prefers dried figs and dates to fresh ones, and really needs to get more exercise. http://www.feedbackmonitor.com http://www.pieheadrecords.com http://www.stainedproductions.com :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Greg Clow ::: greg@stainedproductions.com ::::::::: concert & event promotions ::: http://www.stainedproductions.com :::::: electronic music radio & reviews ::: http://www.feedbackmonitor.com ::: electronic/experimental record label ::: http://www.pieheadrecords.com ::::::::: 158 Close Ave. 2nd Floor ::: Toronto, Ontario M6K 2V5 ::: Canada --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
