Denver Colorado] Equulei is a team of people dedicated to the spread and proliferation of post-modern electronica. There are four main writers/performers, being teams of two located in Denver and Chicago, with all members having auxiliary duties as solo producers, djs, and propagandists for the collective. Equulei creates incredibly smooth, dark, funky downtempo, ambient, and chilled-out trance and jungle that crosses genres frequently but stays true to a style that they have become so well known for. In a flattering review of a live show last year, Chicago's premiere underground magazine D-Low said of Equulei; "... folk music for the 24th century... An eclectic combination of styles, sensibility, and ethereal reality come together; and you find yourself dancing vigorously without the usual 4-on-the-floor techno/trance/house beats we have all been force-fed for years now...." This new folk music mixes just as well in the dark, beam-ridden nightclub strobelights as it does under the moon in the middle of a grassland. Equulei forms a soundtrack for the caves in the hills as well as the burned-out industry under the bridges. It does not involve such folk instruments as guitar, drum, or voice. And yet, all three and many more are moved in and out of the soundscape in a wavelike, pulsating fashion."
