I dunno, I watched "Human Nature" again last night in the afterglow of "Eternal Sunshine", and I have to say I didn't think it was quite nearley as incredible on second viewing. I think eternal sunshine of the spotless mind is on par with the best of the Mindfuck genre, like "Waking Life" "Brazil" "Donnie Darko" and "Abre Los Ojos". A little deeper and more visually stimulating than the other films that crowd has done. And uh, the um sound when he gets a synapse/memory erased is pretty IDM sounding, too! (to vaugley attempt to stay on topic). --- "meg.e.k" <uglitangelo@sprintpcs.com> wrote:

just added 'human nature' to my netflix queue. one of the most amazing things about 'eternal sunshine of the spotless mind' was the extremely creative use of relatively simple visual effects. like the scene on the pond with kate winslet being dragged off into the darkness - this probably didn't take much more than a floodlight and some rope but damn, what an image... this reinforces my opinion that hollywood filmmakers have come to use computer effects as cheap subsitiutes for real creativity and innovation - not that there isn't creativity and innovation going on in the cgi world, but rather that cgi has become a crutch for lazy filmmakers. The recent star wars movies are, perhaps, the best example - the 'perfect' computer-generated visuals only drew attention to the godawful acting and trite storyline. the unanimous 'star' of the film was, of course, yoda - a computer-rendered character. I kind of think these movies would be better if they just gave up the idea of 'real' actors and made the films 100% (instead of 98%) animated. fewer people would probably go see them, but at least the movies wouldn't be such an embarrasment. michel gondry's style is a conflation of high and low-tech visual techniques - he really understands how to use the camera to generate effects that normally consume processor cycles. it's this sense of minimalist restraint that makes the film so human... perhaps the day will come when media piracy forces all filmmakers to work with limited budgets, and every hollywood film will look this good. -Wil M. --- Chispas De Muerte <generentropy@yahoo.com> wrote:

oh, discussion on films of the 'mindfuck genre' on the idm list :-) more hints please, i'm always looking for new films like the ones you've mentioned. my favourites are "the nine lives of thomas katz" and "pi" if you haven't seen those already, go and get it! sven. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

not so much "mindfuck" as "whatthefuck", but takashi miike is well worth checking out. "dead or alive" is a good place to start, albeit cartoony, and if you're into creepfests, "audition" is hard to beat (<- on-topic!) On Tue, Mar 23, 2004 at 11:43:45PM +0100, sven wrote:

i think 1971 was the year of the mind-fuck films. . . the last picture show, vanishing point, two-lane blacktop, gawd the list goes on. . . paris texas in '84 is prob when the genre started back up in full swing and has been mind-fuck'n ever since. could it be that rod stimulae has a more direct route to the core of the brain than does cone stimulae ? . .black and white does a mind-fuck good, pass it on. -=dave ----- Original Message ----- From: "sven" <sven@subscience.de> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Tuesday, March 23, 2004 2:43 PM Subject: Re: [idm] [OT] eternal sunshine of the spotless mind

Why, cuz Audition is sampled by Mochipet on one of his tracks? A casual Takashi Miike viewer may want to watch Happiness of the Katakuris and Visitor Q before Ichi the Killer... but Ichi is worth it, if you have a strong stomach. on-topic in that it's vaguely mindfuck-y. props for the idm-link, though. what track? i'd like to hunt that down. just thinking of asami doing that soft little "kiri-kiri-kiri" chant gives me the shivers... i'd be overjoyed if that was used somewhere.

i'm just slowly getting into deviant japanese cinema... i liked ichi the killer a lot, but i've known people who didn't dig it quite so much. it rides that line between outrageous and physically plausible all too well for some people, i guess. __michal --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
