thanks Kent for the link... Haven't heard that Kerrier District, (which I assume is great), but I'm my snobbish oppinion, all those other people which were mentioned suck it. Many of those Disco Nouveaux tracks are just really cheap - and soulless- copies of "I Feel Love' over and over again.. Don't get me started on the Digital Disco series- 2 of the worst compilations I've ever heard. I mean, it's NOT disco, it's just boring techno. If you want good stuff get "Smith-n-Hack" fucing great IDm influenced-disco... _________________________________________________________________ Stay informed on Election 2004 and the race to Super Tuesday. http://special.msn.com/msn/election2004.armx --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I'd also suggest listening to the Soft Pink Truth("Do You Party?", 2002/3). Some of it isn't particularly dance-floor-ready, but the samples and the way they are put together seem to evoke disco & funk for me. This is especially true of "Promofunk", "Coat Check", "No Love" and "Soft Pink Missy" (although the last one is quite minimal). I also wonder how Akufen's particular brand of microhouse fits into this disco-idm discourse. It's hardly disco, but once again I find myself thinking of disco when I listen to some of the tracks. Hmm... Luis On Thu, 19 Feb 2004, donna summer wrote:

Hey everyone, I usually tend to lurk on here rather than post, but I have to make some decisions and I thought I'd consult the listmembers for their opinions. I'm currently in Toronto, studying Musicology at U of T, and I've been accepted in a number of places in the states for my PhD work. I'm planning on doing my dissertation work on EDM communities and cultural/aesthetic value, so I'm very interested in finding a location that has a good school AND a few vibrant scenes. So do any of you have any opinions on NYC, Chicago and/or Philly? What sort of scenes are strong? How open are the scenes to new people? I spent a few years close to Chicago, but that was in 97-98 and I"m sure things have changed a lot since then... thanks! Luis-Manuel Garcia P.S. If anybody's interested, I have a yet-unpublished paper on The Soft Pink Truth available to download from my website. contact me and I'll give you the URL and the username/password. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Hey Luis, I actually got my undergrad degree from U of T (in engineering though, not musicology). But anyway, I've heard the music scene in Philly is quite good (certainly better than Boston, where I am now). Talk to the guy that runs the SoundList mailing list (he has a lot of ties with the folks in the Philly scene). But in all reality, Toronto is an awesome city. I'd love to still be there, but I was forced to leave. :( Good luck! -- Adam "satyam, shivam, sundaram" --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

hey there, being in philly and having been to toronto for a week this past summer, i'd say you'd be better off staying in toronto over coming to philly. unless you're like a superhuge Flowchart fan, or you're dead set on catching alot of Flyers, Phillies, Eagles, or Sixers games on tv, or you smoke alot of weed, or you like the dirty ghetto vibe. the scene prolly looks more vibrant from the outside, but honestly, the "idm" scene is kinda wank- you got one monthly for experimental and blip-pop and chillout stuff (ours), then you got your spacecase wacky west philly dark ambient and any weird shit goes type monthly for the lurker types, then a dropping of tech-house events, some deep house stuff, but for the most part philly is for indie rock hipsters who dye their hair black and i dunno what the hell else. oh yeah, hip-hop and thug life. not to mention the city's like a million years old and crumblin'. and south philly smells like fish and ass mixed together. in closing, i go to Hotlanta and i'm like, "damn we suck!". i go to Toronto and i'm like "damn we suck". i go to NYC and i'm like "damn we suck!". as for most of the rest of the dirty south, i'm like "damn this sucks!". so, you know, it's all relative. but yeah, philly is half as cheap as nyc rent-wise. but you get what you pay for i guess. if you like slumming it, and straight rudeness... philly might be the spot for you. there's a pretty large deep and tech house scene here, but its all during the week. weekenders bring more money, so places like soma and moda put on dj's who spin the humpty dance and michael jackson to please the out-of-towners. john schenk (or however its spelled) is supposed to be the new curator for some bar on east market, which will guarantee some decent stuff. are you part of the crowd that throws the monthly with sean? if not, that makes a whopping 2 idm monthlies. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

A fantastic CD... Can't stop listening to it... And I also want to add Metro Area in this thread, they are producing great disco/electro/house (?) music. I don't know about most of you guys, but I like just plain (vintage) disco - it's funny because I was young when disco was in its hayday and the odds were against me ever liking it. My exposure was mostly to the backlash against it in the early 80s. Furthermore I was raised in a house that probably looked at black urban culture disdainfully in those days. So while we all have our musical evoltion, learning about different styles, genres, and fads of music, mine had me go through the normal 90s rave->house/techno->idm-> to disco/funk. The point being that when you listen to real disco (and funk), you realize how ahead of its time it was. The grooves that the bands establish, the innovative twists that people did -live- with synthesizers, and the (sometimes) top notch production. And hell, catchy lyrics never hurt either. If you listen to the current crop of dutchish retro (legowelt, et al) or the Disco IDM (I think it's just house with IDM production values) it's great... But then turn on a Brothers Johnson, Telex, or Fat Larry record, realize it's pushing 25 years of age and how current it sounds. You'll have to dig through a lot of whiny R&B and cheaply made fad-disco to hear the gems, but it's definitely worth the effort. -Gil --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I know alot of people who have made that kind of pathway through music like yourself. They just weren't in the right place to appriciate disco when they were younger, but then after getting exposed to alot of different things, it seemed right there and obviously really good. I think though that also comes from the perspective on music techno/idm people tend to have - that newer stuff is where to look to find good/appealing music. But realistically, there's more good old music, just because there's so much MORE older music. I don't think its even so much that its current sounding - since we're always in a perpetual state of retro-awareness now - but just that its simply good sounding. I just wish there were more people who didn't have pidgeonholed taste and could get down to good classic funk, disco, legowelt, idm, glitchhop and breakcore all in one night and party-up the whole time. - cutups --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
