other than Japanese techno legend and mastermind KEN ISHII, with GABRIEL
PALOMO and MATTHEW MARTIN. (This will be one of only 4 select US dates Ken
is playing on this tour, then he's off to Europe and Japan. Best catch him

THE JAPANESE LEGEND RETURNS...
Hovering between techno based textures and subdued sonic bliss, Japanese
techno legend KEN ISHII is among the most innovative, experimental composers
in contemporary techno. Working in a Detroit-derived framework and drawing
from a from a wide array of influences(Yellow Magic Orchestra, DAF,
Kraftwerk, Nitzer Ebb, Derrick May), Ishii's exploration of avant-garde
compositional techniques and the prominent influence of digital synthesis
has positioned him as one of the most prominent and influential figures in
electronic music, supported by world class artists such as Dave Clarke, Luke
Slater, Thomas Schumacher and many more?
Ken's latest ?Future In Light?, is reminiscent of early Detroit and marks a
return of sorts to his techno roots, representative of his improvised live
sets in a club environment. Having broken out of the specialist, purist
techno circles and reaching a much wider audience while maintaining its
underground credibility, Ken Ishii has proven that he is at the forefront of
internationally known electronic music composers and DJs without limiting
his musical pedigree.
Honored that he has chosen our event for his Chicago stop, one of only four
American stops on his tour, we welcome Ken back to Chicago at the venerable
SMARTBAR for what's sure to be a phenomenal night of electronic music
funk...

who's shown as much love and devotion for not only techno, but electronic
music in general as Gabriel Palomo has. He might well be the the city's
strongest devotee of the ever-evolving journeys of electronic dance music,
which is saying alot considering all the musicians, artists and produces who
have sprung from the windy city.
Musically, he seeks to create and explore untouched concepts in sound,
"either guiding you in space travel or transmitting coordinates, bringing
you back home to mother Earth." Maniacal.... As a DJ (preferably on three
decks) he has played alongside the likes of Sven Vath, Christian Smith,
Marco Bailey, Marco Carola, Mhonolink, Mark Verbos, Ben Sims, Oliver Ho, Tim
Xavier, Andrei Morant, Joey Beltram, Mike Dearborn, The Punisher... the list
is endless. Gabe is a one man army both behind the decks AND live.

collective Detroit, UK, and German techno influences to again give the
Smartbar soundsystem a good workover.

Recognized as a key force in the Canadian electronic music scene, JAKE
FAIRLEY has had nearly twenty releases under various names and on various
labels since June 2000, mostly under the Kompakt Distribution umbrella. A
Toronto native, Jake has developed something just a little harder, a little
drier, and a lot dirtier than the minimal take on techno eminating from
Toronto's sister city of Montreal.
From the very beginning, Jake?s music has shown a bigger focus on stretching
minimal techno into the popular conscious rather than the experimental.
Spending much of his youth watching bands play live has pushed Jake to try
and perform his music rather than merely present it. As of late, his music
has begun to show it's rock and roll roots more and more through using
distorted sounds, a steady beat, and occasionally aggressive vocals.
After spending an extended amount of time playing all over Europe, Jake
returns to North America with a live set that is one of the most impressive
in the business. Don't miss out on this rare Chicago set.

With the forge of his thoughts and ideas and a refusal to resort to the
conventional, Sheldon Thompson's (aka PAN/TONE aka Shelbono del Monte aka
Gringo Grinder) compositional style is more that of a minimalist rock
(ROCKNO) approach rather than an auditorial appeal. In other words, Sheldon
sets out to rock dancefloors, motivated to leave no one chin stroking.
Simply, this is music for the double fisted drinkers and the all-night
partiers, still focusing on creating compositions that have a sense of
independence; a sound that branches away from the norm.
The PAN/TONE Live PA has been performed worldwide at such renowned venues
such WMF(Berlin), BATOFAR(Paris), STUDIO 672(Cologne-home to Kompakt),
ZOOBIZARRE(Bordeaux), SUITE 212(Stuttgard), SUBWAY(Cologne), NxNE
Festival(Toronto), UNTITLED@SHELTER(Detroit) and of course has played
Montreal's MUTEK Festival both for the main edition and the global
minifestivals in Chile and Europe.
After living the better part of last year in Cologne and touring around
Europe, Senor del Monte brings his distorted take on techno to Chicago for
the very first time.

With his releases on Onitor as half of DUPLEX100 (with Phil Stumpf), his
REYNOLD and BABYREYNOLD projects, the awesome MINIMAL DANCIN' monthly
parties @ NOUVEAU CASINO, and running his TRENTON imprint, Parisian Sam
Rouanet's dedication is unsurpassed. With a musical ear developed from early
on, his interest actually honed towards the kind of independent rock put out
by the likes of Fugazi, No means No, and Helmet. But whilst experimenting
with new sounds and developing a love for hip hop and general production
tactics, he would move to Chicago after meeting Matt Lux (bass player from
Isotope 217?), immersing himself in the Chicago post rock community, while
at the same time being exposed to the Chicago house scene. Here, a love for
unorthodox sounds processed within the 4/4 realm would be born, and Sam
hasn't turned back since.
A follow up to his dj set last year at 773, Sam plays under his REYNOLD
moniker, surely bent to shake that ass up.

Originally from Kiel, Germany, Claudia Marquardt aka Ptoile moved to Paris
in 2001 working for Discograph, as well as handling bookings for the Lizard
Lounge. A Bright Light in the Parisian scene, she has brought her brand of
minimal funk throughout the city (Somo bar/Caf? de la plage/OPA/Caf?
Cherie/L?ile Enchantee/Club Plaza/Pulp/LizardLounge/NouveauCasino/BATOFAR)
alongside an impressive list of minimal house and minimal techno autuers:
Jeremy Caulfield (Dumb-unit/Trapez), Duplex100 (Minimal Dancin/Onitor), Mike
Shannon (Cynosure/Force-inc) , Jeff Milligan (Revolver), Jake Fairley
(Sender), pan/tone (sub-static), M.I.A. (sub-static), Andy Vaz (Background),
Gebr. Teichmann (Festplatten), Raumagent Alpha (Festplatten), Reynold
(Dumb-Unit), Rene Breitbarth (Treibstoff).
With a monthly residency at BATOFAR and a new release on Trenton records
slated for 2004, Ptoile shows no sign of letting up. A follow up to her dj
set last year at 773, catch her as she graces the bottle soundsystem with a
dj set of funk infused minimal gems.

John Patterson has a built a reputation as one of Chicago?s most exciting
techno DJs, mixing on three turntables performing with the pace, precision,
and trickery that has captivated audiences (many times outshining those he
has opened for). Spinning alongside world renown DJs such as Billy Nasty,
Gaetano Parisio, Luke Slater and many others, John introduced himself to the
Chicago electronic music scene over the past few years. Known for his
blistering sets incorporating influences from the techno propagated by the
likes of Mark Broom, Ben Sims, and Claude Young, his versatility and
penchant towards the dub/minimal side of the techno spectrum is unknown to
some. For those who haven?t heard yet, this will be a chance to hear a
different side of John?s techno reportoire. After previous miscues, we are
happy and excited to have John perform a demonstration of his djing
versatility in full effect tonight.
