is this the "best" format (in terms of file size/quality payoff) to think about recording vinyl to pc in? i've started doing a bit of research on this subject but just wanted to get the views from this list - you all seem very well informed on the matter :) thx in advance gv ----- Original Message ----- From: "EggyToast" <eggy@eggtastic.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Sunday, January 18, 2004 6:15 PM Subject: Re: [idm] bleep / 128kbps ?

Y'all (anyone interested in "best" formats & quality levels) should go check out hydrogenaudio.org - "THE" place to go for audio codec info. Last time I checked, the consensus was that the best thing was still to encode with lame, using the "--alt-preset standard" option, or if you want, "--alt-preset extreme" (or some such...) From what I've heard right here on the list, Bleep.com encodes with lame at the "standard" preset, so they're using the "best" codec and quality level for pretty much any music. However, I'm "lazy" and not an audiophile, so I just use let iTunes do my work for me at its standard settings. Sounds fine to me, and my files are smaller - spread out over thousands of files, I'm saving a few gigs of space, and if I ever get an iPod-type device, I'll be able to fit more music on it. Not that I'm arguing others should do this, I'm just saying what I do because I feel like it. :P -Adam Piontek Graham Voice wrote:

Go to hydrogenaudio.org and download "easylame14en.exe", this is a front-end to LAME and uses VBR presets of a high standard. I've been very happy using this - otherwise go with Ogg Vorbis, which may well give you superior audio quality but is not as well supported by 3rd party players etc. I * --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

And if you use a Mac, there's a front end that plugs in to iTunes: <http://www.blacktree.com/apps/index.html?iTunes-LAME/index.html> I've been happy with the results. -- Tim Moore --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
