Book Review and Summary by Kimberly Wulfert, PhD
'Mauve: How One Man Invented a Color That Changed the World'
by Simon Garfield
"It reads like a novel about the historical development of the industrial chemistry field and of
coal-tar products in particular. It is more a history of the chemistry behind synthetic dye
development, than the history of dyeing textiles. This is evidenced by the fact that Garfield
seldom mentions what type of fabric the new dye, or any of the many dyes he mentions, work on --
cotton, silk, wool or linen. Based on former knowledge, originally synthetic mauve dye was
discovered on silk. My impression is that many of the dyes, colors, and information given by
Garfield, relate to wool and silk, rather than cotton textiles. Garfield discusses mordants only
once in the book. The mordant that William Perkin found to work with cotton was a tannin. Mauve was
not acidic, and all existing mordants failed to work on synthetic dyes. It took some time for this
discovery, and the exact date is not noted."
Excellent book, btw.

"Acid man, acid man, acid man, acid man!"
Back when 'Acid Man' was released, I heard a street bum
- an old man pushing a shopping cart full of rags -
singing the lyrics to that track, over and over and over and over. ;)
He musta been a regular at Shooom.
