For years and years I've been extremely happily been using Winamp 2.x and just went to check for some new skins and BOOM! only a brand new page touting their new look WinAmp5. There's a WinAmp5 Pro for which one must pay and a downloadable free version with fewer bells and whistles, but I got an error page when I attempted to dwnld it. Even if you search Google for Classic Winamp, you still get redirected to the new v5 page. So I'm going to continue using WinAmp 2.91 (great player and I have no reason to complain) - was that the last available freeware release?? I did get WinAmp3 a year or so ago, but it was buggy and I uninstalled it again. What is everyone else here using? I'm encoding mainly .ogg files now - is there a superior Ogg Vorbis player around? Again, I'm perfectly happy with WinAmp's performance... just wondering if I'm missing the Next Big Thing ;-) Happy 2004 to all! iPod, therefore I don't itunes. http://www.nypost.com/news/regionalnews/14019.htm ANGRY IPOD PEOPLE ASSAULT BATTERY-PRICE SHOCKER December 21, 2003 -- A dead battery in the trendiest of digital music players shocked two New Yorkers into taking on Apple Computer and may have helped win favorable results for the wired set. Casey Neistat, 22, and his brother, Van, 28, stuck it to the computer company when the battery in Casey's iPod went kaput and Apple suggested he buy a new player. A frustrated Neistat did, but then he and his sibling got even, blasting Apple in a two-minute online movie. The story began when the rechargeable battery sealed inside Neistat's 18- month-old digital music player failed to hold a charge. Neistat's iPod, like every one Apple sells, came with only a one-year warranty, according to an article in the Washington Post. He went to the Apple Store on Prince Street in SoHo and called the company's tech-support line three times for help. Each time he was given the same line: Purchase another unit (they range from $299 to $499) because the cost of repairs, labor and shipping for repairing his iPod would run about the same as a new model. So Neistat forked over $400 for a new iPod, but then he fought back, the article said. He and his brother created a two-minute film, called "iPod's Dirty Secret," that soon flooded the Internet. In the flick, Neistat spray-paints a stenciled phrase, "IPOD'S UNREPLACEABLE BATTERY LASTS ONLY 18 MONTHS," on iPod ads plastered around the city. etc.... --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

True. And since then Apple has instituted a replacement program for batteries that die after the warranty period. The program has even been given the stamp of approval by the brothers Neistat. or ever better, for only 49 dollars you can just change it yourself in five minutes. http://www.ipodbattery.com/ what I found odd, is the fact that these batteries WERE available as a third party product for a while now, yet people wanted to badger apple for charging too much for a new battery. the OEM maker of a product is always going to be more expensive than anybody else for repairs, so instead of whining about it and defacing all the apple ads in nyc, just go buy an aftermarket battery for only 49 dollars and put the damn thing in yourself. -kiya --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Thanks to everybody who replied with their views and recommendations to my question. 2.91's cool and I'll stick with that for now. However, are there still any sites around with downloadable skins for the "classic" winamp? Not that I *need* any more, but they're fun. From: "Matthew Richmond"

you can still download all the 2.91 skins and plugins from www.winamp.com. I don't think there have been any v5 plugins released yet and all the 2.91 skins are flagged as 'skin type: classic'. ...skism --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Easy enough to do, if one is aware of the existence of the $49 after-market battery. Most were not aware of that option, called Apple, and were directed to purchase a new unit.
