I think it is more a philosophical question using breaks or unique samples in the songs. Even using the 808 or the 909 is not just about programming the patterns and pressing play. It's the postproduction (or lets say unsing effects) which can give the sound its fully potential. Ok, we all have been able to see that there can be a whole kind of music based on one simple (and unbelievable sounding) instrument (takling about the 303). And I agree that this special kind of sound, coming out of this instrument will never be boring or played out. But there will (and has to be) a development in music. And isn't it just great taking any kind of sample and building a whole song whith all the stuff out of it (like Funkstoerung for example does) sounding linke nothing you ever heard before? So in my opinion it's the sound that counts in the end. Pretty much 85% of all jungle/drum and bass stuff utilizes the amen break or a similar break. For newer breaks stuff that doesn't get totally crap, check out the new Luke Vibert 12"s under Amen Andrews. The old Plug stuff is better in my opinion. Another of my favorite jungle/d&b producers to use loads of Amens is Photek...Goldie does too....just pick up a jungle/d&b mix cd and see for yourself how much it's used. Hrvatski used pretty much the Amen break for every stinkin' drum sample on his first few records. Even his new Planet-Mu album (which I've heard is all old stuff) uses mostly Amen samples. For earlier stuff, check out...early hiphop. Like Ultramagnetic MC's..that's older than NWA or others that built off them. And this time, Kool Keith is right, everybody stole his shit! Check out TapeOp (www.tapeop.com) for the Hrvatski article that discusses breaks, their overuse, where to download them and where they're from. As for the Eric B & Rakim Arc000...can anybody tell me who does the Prince rework/remix? cheers, chhris -- ******** Toast and Jam Recordings www.tandjrec.com ********* --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

What does that mean? Aren't all breaks similar? Are you saying 85% of jungle samples their breakbeats? Did you do a scientific study, btw? Anyway, fuck all y'all. The amen still wrecks the place. 808, 909, 303, Funky Drummer and Amen. There's a reason they all got so popular. You listen to a Remarc record, a Doc Scott record, a Squarepusher record and an Erik B and Rakim record and you tell me that the Amen is played out. People were saying it was played out before Remarc, before Squarepusher, before Hrvatski + Lesser, etc. It's drum samples that happen to sound good. How can drum samples be played out? I think one of the things that's pushed me away from IDM in recent years is this orientalism. The idea that a drum sound is played out- that making innovative "sounds" instead of tracks or mixes, is the problem. I'd rather listen to a solid hour-long minimal acid set than listen to some wank show off how many computations per second his Powerbook gets. -- :: atomly :: [ atomly@atomly.com : www.atomly.com ... I completely agree. The Amen break sounds amazing and always will. It has become an instrument in and of itself in contemporary music. Saying its played out is like saying the piano is played out. -Aaron ----- Original Message ----- From: atomly <atomly@atomly.com> Date: Tuesday, December 16, 2003 12:04 pm Subject: Re: [idm] RE: Amen Break/Breaks recommendations

What photek songs have you heard that use the amen break? I think one of the reasons photek got so popular was his avoidance of breaks, everything was programmed using individual samples. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

so is the argument pertaining to amen "sounds", or sequencing a sampled chunk of the amen "breakbeat". a lot of people sample the breakbeat - and just tune it right so it loops - especially the old hip hop stuff...that's cool, but a lot of people have done some pretty amazing stuff by building kits out of the different hits and combining them w/ other sounds & effects. you can sample the kick, hats, and snare of a break and make something totally different and it becomes a new "break" - which is what a lot of people (including photek) do/did. i hear a lot of tracks where someone will just use the snare. or the kick. you know what i'm saying. either way - nothin but amen luv from this end. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Brandon" <djresonance@yahoo.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Tuesday, December 16, 2003 12:15 PM Subject: Re: [idm] RE: Amen Break/Breaks recommendations

I think the main thing about any break editing is that the editing is more important than the raw break. Although the raw break contributes alot, and in some cases they sound good alone or pasted into a new context, its really the editing that creates the final sound.. The amen has been used ...alot....to the point that you feel like you've heard all the permutations. But in the end its just a tool. RE: Photek. I can't think of many amen tunes he's done.
