Dj Aura I think he goes by. I've heard worse, but nothing really earthshattering.

Na, me either. No laptop- highly processed guitar, something creating some drum loops. With all the reverb/delay/flange/phase on the guitar, it reminded me of some of the Cure stuff. The slow, lo-fi droney drum parts reminded me of Scorn. It sorta came off like he was just screwing around with delay sounds. Even at 30 minutes, his set was 25 minutes too long. And by the way, his album sounds nothing like this. It sounds like really half-assed demo versions of Richard Devine songs.

I knew what to expect having seen him a few times now, and ya, it's the same shit he's been doing for a while now. Not offensive, but not great either. The only album of his that I have is his first (the one without any rapping), and so live when he busts out the microphone, it's a big downer for me. Also, he seems like he takes a bit too long between each song to fuck around and yell things like some vulgar drunkard. Musically, his stuff is OK, but I can do without all the tomfoolery (and we all know that's never gonna change).

For us, Phoenecia was next. I've seen them play some really fantastic shows in the past, as well as some real stinkers. This one was somewhere in the middle, but definitely leaning towards the stinker side of the spectrum. They had the beats going, but sounding a lot like Plastikman, which for me translates as 'super boring'. They would find a loop for about 20 seconds and then morph it into something else for about 20 seconds, and then morph it into something else for 20 seconds, and so on. It was the right tempo for dancing, and it had the beats for dancing, yet it inspired no dancing. And you could feel that the crowd was ready to start shakin' it, and a few of 'em tried to, but it never lasted long. So everybody just stood there with their arms folded, or chatted with friends or went outside. They did do one song about halfway through that had a good punch to it, but everything else was just really boring. Then Richie. He didn't go on until 2 AM, and I think most people were pretty sleepy with tired feet at this point. Luckily, he was the high point of the evening and it seems like he recharged everybodies batteries. Not quite as aggressive sounding as I've heard him before (Nesh and Sugar are tops), but he did have the people (what was left of them) dancing furiously.

It wasn't rockin' in LA until 2 AM, and overall it was a really really looooong evening.

I'm assuming you mistoke Richard for Dino? Did Dino play this show? He rocks live provided he's got his aides with him. - A

nope. shimone is right.. that was richard devine for sure that played after otto.. richard also wins for the Yngwie Malmsteen of the laptop genre. those faces he makes remind me of the faces 80s hair band guitarists would make when bending that one note too far during a guitar solo like it was painful. -kiya --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
