Hello, I love IDM in many of it's guises, but I find Venetian Snares (& the like) too scary, too disturbing, too aggressive. Big deal, you might say. But I'm just wondering where I fell off the "hardcore" wagon. In my youth, I would be front and centre at shows such as Motorhead, Black Sabbath, and many other really aggressive acts, loving every minute. So, for you who enjoy the more hardcore electronica - are you young and carefree, or forever committed to noize, or enduring it for it's artistic merit, or what? Another question - if you have various friends over, would put Venetian Snares on? Just looking to provoke conversation. Cheers, Martin [aging softie fart] http://www.musicwomb.org/

I have been wanting to like V/Snares, mainly because he seems to share my love of cats :-) but yes, few of the tracks could be termed to be 'pleasant'. Challenging, yes!

I love VSnares, and that whole category of hardcore IDM/breakcore/whatever you want to call it. I don't know if I'd still be considered young and carefree (I'm 25) but I kind of figure that I won't stop liking this stuff as I age. My roommate is 38, and (fortunately!) also loves that kind of stuff. I have friends who like it, others who can't stand it, so the music I play when I have people over will depend on who they are and how much I feel like annoying them. I really think that this is a burgeoning scene right now...that a lot of people around my age who were into and subsequently got tired of 90s-style hardcore techno, who were introduced to IDM through Richard D. James Album and its ilk, who have Reason and a CD burner, now are starting to produce music in this vein. Kind of the "post-rave" music for those of us who don't feel like mellowing out and listening to house music or minimal techno. Not that I have anything against house or minimal techno, but I think I'll always have more of an appreciation for breakbeat mashups and the kind of dark humor that these guys incorporate into their sound. (BTW, I just subbed to this list. Hi. I'm Tim, I live just outside of Washington, DC. Sometimes I DJ hard techno/acid/hard house as "Tim Resistor". That might sound weird since I was just talking about how much I love breakbeats, but it all makes sense to me.) -- Tim Moore --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

young and carefree, or forever committed to noize, or enduring it for it's artistic merit, or what? Another question - if you have various friends over, would put Venetian Snares on? personally, what i've heard of VS i don't much like. there are certain harsh frequencies i don't appreciate any artist using, because they just hurt. on top of that, their violent artwork puts me off a bit. maybe i'm missing the point or lacking context, but to me there's a difference between the accused "sexist" artwork of brute on the KMFDM covers (which is clearly an OTT joke and does not always feature brutalized women), and the VS covers i've seen. as for other "hard" electronica, i enjoy somatic responses, celluloid mata, morgenstern, imminent starvation (though not their newer incarnation imminent). of course, kid606, aphex twin, and chris clark have their hard (though not actually distorted) moments. if i have friends over i might put on miles davis 'bitches brew', or if it was a party, the beastie boys or jane's addiction. but not hardcore electronica. to me that's working, travelling, dancing, or get-yer-ass-in-gear music. d. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I think its kind of interesting how Venetian Snares came to be part of "IDM". Because really before snares's stuff came out on planet-mu, not much hardcore was really included in the realm of "IDM". Snares was just some new variant from the hardcore scene. But now, alot of kids will say they like idm..."you know, like venetian snares, aphex, autechre". Its just an interesting shift. When it comes down to it, its just a matter of taste. Most people who like Motorhead, Black Sabbath or whatever don't like snares either. If you like other music that's discussed on this IDM list, there's definitely no reason that you're going to by definition like snares.

put Venetian Snares on? Most of my close friends are into snares, breakcore, noise, but also a variety of other music. Its just one flavor out of many. Its kind of hard to explain why you like something simply, but i like the energy, creativity and just the raw sound of it. - cutups --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

i think snares is awesome. i think what i like about his tracks are the tones, the textures and the speed. what's great about snares (as opposed to a lot of artists, including hardcore or whatever you may call it) is the intricacy of his music. i listen to snares all the time when friends are around, most are into it, some are not, but are into other weird music. of course what's 'scary' is going to be different to everyone, i personally don't find it scary, maybe a little aggressive... -zak ----- Original Message ----- From: "Martin Lomas" <mlomas@rogers.com> To: "Hypereal IDM" <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Friday, September 12, 2003 10:11 AM Subject: [idm] Venetian Snares is too scary Hello, I love IDM in many of it's guises, but I find Venetian Snares (& the like) too scary, too disturbing, too aggressive. Well in answer to your question, i love venetian snares and will play them whenever i feel like listening to them.Friends will drop by and i know they don't expect me 2 play music to suit them, i don't expect that of them in regards to me either. Now this isn't to say i will play merzbow on 11 when i have company, i do think however that you should be yourself and listening to the music you like is one small part of being you. Now in regards to age, i am 27 and i'm not sure if i am committed to noise, i enjoy some yes, but i also enjoy, melodic electronica, ambient, and a lot music not electronic at all.
