Kent, Thanks for your thoughts on Squarepusher. I think you're right on point (though I've heard only the LP, not the single). What I think is interesting is that with the album, he is moving more toward the "sincere" music you speak of -- it's much darker, less about genre-for-genre's-sake (one potential avenue for irony), and more like using drum'n'bass (or breaks, more broadly) as a lingua franca in which to pursue a more personal investigation of mass, texture, and the limits of the step-time sequencer. A number of tracks on the new album almost venture into electro-acoustic territory - certainly a notable change of pace for him. Cheers Philip

i saw vibert and squarepusher at the bowery in new york. while i'm a long-time fan of vibert, i can sadly say that i'll never go to see him dj ever again. i dont know what in the hell he was doing, but i was not impressed. now, i can understand someone using traktor to dj a gig, and i have no problem with that, but that doesnt mean that you should actually be worse off. he was obviously using the auto-beatmatch features, which i would also normally be able to forgive, but.. oh man.. but.. he seemed to have absolutely no sense of musical phrasing. at all. again, i love luke vibert, and i have a lot of respect for the man, but i'm better off forgetting that i saw him than remembering this part of the night. his mixes were choppy, to be pleasant. his transitions were.. well.. not so much transitions, as more randomly dropped in chunks of other songs. either he couldnt count to four, or didnt care. i'm more likely to say the latter, as every time he fucked up severely, he visibly flinched. now, there were times where what he did really, really came through. a few of his mixes were absolutely, totally, incredible. he kept dropping parts of cheesy above other songs, which made me smile, but... man.. luke... next time, please wear headphones and preview the shit. next time, actually pay attention to what measure you mix stuff in on. next time, dont play so much afx. we know the songs, true, but 5 or 6 tracks over 2 hours is a bit much. variety. but that song which i cant remember the name of.. the breaks remix of the old track that goes "incense, pepperments," that was right on. as for squarepusher.... wow. i talked to a friend halfway through the show via text messages, and all i could say was "fucking wow." literally. i've seen a lot of people play live, but i've never actually had to lift my jaw off of the ground before in order to shout. at no point did tom have to scream "MAKE SOME FUCKING NOISE," but he did have to wave his hands a few times to get people to shut the hell up. wow. just.. wow. i cant go into more detail than that. They probably have an idea, and it's probably the standard club times. I've always thought that was a pretty silly question. If you go out and see bands at all, the times should be known to you. Then again, with touring acts, sometimes they're a bit weird. But they'd rather you show up early/on time and drink. --- Household Names - one reason why tax day this year won't suck. Hardly. Depends on the artist and the venue. Venetian Snares in SF last year didn't even start 'til 3am, and OST after him at 4:15 or something. With a bigger show like Squarepusher, I would think he'd go on before midnight, but you never know.

as a person that's gone to over 300 shows in my life i can firmly say that this is totally untrue when talking about any type of electronic music that is not in a "rock venue" or any hiphop act. i've been to many shows where the headliner went on at 1am, 2am, 3am, or the "normal time" that artists go on with most types of music which is around 10pm to 11pm... so therefore leading me to, i have no clue when he's going on at... :) -kiya iamacopierltd. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Who makes it to the shows at 2, 3 am? No wonder electronic music tends to attract such scruffy individuals :P derek -- eggytoast.com - eggtastic.com ------ it's in your grocer's freezer --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

what an amazing show last nite!! i was surprised to see how many people came out for the show! all in all, it was fun. musically, in my opinion, luke vibert showed how well rounded he was. he played everything from hip hop to breaks to acid to electro to drum and bass to funk to ragga- even threw on some old ass afx and kraftwerk for good measure! brilliant laptop dj set, well thought of selections. by the time he was done playing, i was already worn out for squarepusher! he definitely ROCKED the fuck out of the SF crowd! as for jenkinson, i loved his implementation of his bass guitar- it added more fun to his set- a more hands on approach made it that much better! what a fuckin' maniac he is on that thing! he was breakin necks all nite....and his encore? AMAZING...very memorable! my neck hurts and my back is sore. basura. [echolocation/distracted] p.s. i absolutely loved the organ music playing before and after their sets!

i love luck vibert's stuff in the variety of monikers that he goes under - but i have to say that i was a little under impressed w/ the live performance last night. i've seen squarepusher b4, and went mostly to see mr. luke, so i'm not hating, just wish there was more presence and mash edits from his sources. i think it has something to do with having to follow (or precede as was the case last night) squarepusher, who truly fucking rips it up, and then drops a measure or two so you knew what track it used to be :) and i totally agree on the how amazingly well rounded his music and mixes are - a lot of good heart vibes on the dance floor when it was on, but it also felt like a black'spoitation film here and there ;) word to the wise for anyone going to the mezzanine for shows in the future - if somebody comes shoving, watch your back - they may be friends of the door guys.... -s On Thu, 2003-07-24 at 12:12, Melangenoir@aol.com wrote:

Hmmm... when I saw him in LA some months back he said his girlfriend due to deliver their second child like in April or May(if I remember correctly)... perhaps his thoughts are back home? shift8 wrote:

sure i was blown away. but... im sorry, i thought the squarepusher show last night was crap. technically impressive, for sure-o. an unbelievable level. but wasn't anyone else insulted at the assumption that the audience is so attention deprived that any moment not crammed with huge sound is a moment wasted? whatever happened to subtlety? contrast? i understand it was a "dance" show but even that was sparse. lets face it- we all may as well have been watching a good old fashioned yngvee malmstein show. at least he'd a had fire shootin up. how many notes can we play? scalloped fretboard and all. ;) i should qualify this by adding that the whole thing was made worse because i know what an incredible composer he actually is. Ritalin anyone? alan on 7/24/03 1:26 PM, lysaabi at lysaabi@earthlink.net wrote:
