Anybody know anything about the opening act at last Friday's FUNKSTÖRUNG show in SF (the guy before Sote)? I presume it was an artist named Comute (supposedly on M3rck, but no mention of him on their site). I really liked what I heard and want to hear more. -chachi

that was actually Sote, and in my opinion was the most impressive act of the night. i could NOT believe what i was hearing... he spins at 26mix once or twice a month, hopefully he'll start doing more live sets in the same vein as what he did friday night.. oh, and he might start doing Iran Chef (a play on iron chef) on local access, i'll hopefully be helping out.. it's an iranian cooking show. watch us cook! watch us play hardcore techno records! watch us eat the food and dance! -kiya iamacopierltd. Nope, I know who Sote is, I played a show with him a few months ago in Sacramento,CA - big guy, impressive beard, hard-fckn'core music. No, I'm talking about the guy who played before him (shorter, skinny guy, played some huge stuttering electro beats consumed with layers and layers of melodic washes, had a partner on-stage with him during the last half of the set). I thought his set and the 8fm set were brilliant. Sote's industrial gabber set sent me outside (I'm not trying to hate, I've seen him perform a much better, radically different set just a few months ago), Machine Drum was impressive but reminded me of a less disciplined Prefuse 73, and FUNKSTÖRUNG was predictably great but ruined by these fruity middle-aged gothic ravers dancing next to me who thought they were in the Matrix or some shit. People, I know IDM is hard to dance to, but that does not give you license to prance around some Renaissance Fair/Tai Chi/Pee-pee dance. That shit is embarrassing! Sorry for the tangent, but please, if anyone knows who that opening act was (or can at least verify that the artist's name is Comute) please let me know. Thanks. -chachi

It was mostly Venetian Snares, i walked in to the Befriend a childkiller rmx from "Find Candace" and thought "MY PEOPLE!" There were like 3 tracks from "Doll Doll Doll" also. It was nice to hear this music at the volume for which it was intended :) I chilled at the back sipping my water through most of Sote's set and realized after a while that I was sitting next to Kit Clayton! He was very nice and alleviated my fears of coming off like a groveling fanboy even though I gushed about "Lateral Forces" and the production on the new GC album a bit too effusively. 8fm I liked best when he was doing the heavy ragga/breakbeat influenced stuff.

Good lord that machinedrum set rocked me, i was right up in front by the left speaker for the whole thing and despite his two laptop crashes and the speaker glitching out (in a bad way) I was still thoroughly impressed.

Preach it brother. My girl, a longtime clubber, put the kibosh on their freaky activities by non-subtly standing in their way glaring at 'em, but unfortunately wasn't able to maintain presence through the whole set. I'd say that dancing at all is better then what I saw a lot of people at the FUNKST?RUNG show doing i.e. standing around with their arms crossed frowning and starring at the performers like a bunch of super serious snobs. I mean it is called intelligent DANCE music not intelligent SNOB music. Does it really bother you that much to see someone else having a good time and dancing to the music that they love. I'd say it's your attitude that's embarrassing not the danceing that me and my friends did. -charles http://mp3.com/groundchuckles __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! OK, From now on let?s call it ISM. Because of people like you, snobbery is a part of the idm scene just as it is a part of every scene. However, I'm a firm believer in our ability as a community to seek out and destroy you and your cohorts. Take this as a warning. All people seen snobing around will be shot. All people seen wearing boring clothing that their mothers bought for them will be shot. As far as fashion taste, it seems to me that my friend Magnus? outfit (fishnet shirt, etc.) which he designed and sewed himself was a hell of a lot more creative then the black sweatshirt and converse sneakers that seems to be the standard uniform you snobs aspire to. It also seems to me that people who think of themselves as being on the cutting edge of music would be a little bit more open to creativity that isn?t based on the status quo. -charles http://mp3.com/groundchuckles __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Seems I touched on a sensitive topic. To clarify, I have no qualms with people dancing their ass off however they like at any show - people should dance - it makes the whole experience more enjoyable (I know I was getting down). The issue I was trying to address is this recurring phenomena of people doing this Tai Chi 'calling of the spirits' thing at IDM shows (maybe they do that dance everywhere and I only see them at IDM shows?). For one, it strikes me as odd that a music so rich with rhythm inspires folks to do this slow-motion psychedelic martial arts thing. Secondly, there's a reason people do Tai Chi in the park (or in the grass seats at a Phish concert) - it takes up space. It's pretty rude (and selfish) to expect the people around you who shelled out their $15 to see their heroes perform to have to accommodate your haphazard slo-mo kung-fu spirit circle, especially in such a small venue. Whatever, it's not my mission in life to be the dance police. If the divine spirit is telling you to prance around like David Carradine on mescaline then by all means. Just don't shoot me because my mom dresses me funny. -chachi
