on the floor productions presents... Wednesday, June 11th, 2003 @ Little Brother's - 1100 N. High St. Columbus, OH Funkst?rung - Rosenheim, Germany - K7! - 90-minute live PA The duo of Michael Fakesch and Chris De Luca first made acquaintance at a techno nightclub in their hometown of Rosenheim, Germany. Their first six records produced were recorded under the moniker Musik Aus Strom and consisted of distorted Techno tracks released by the Dutch labels Bunker and Acid Planet run by techno legend Unit Moebius. After redefining their approach and sound they settled on a new name, Funkst?rung, which translates to "Radio (Funk) Interference (St?rung) in their native German tongue. Having released dozens of singles and with remixes of everyone from Wu-Tang Clan and East Flatbush Project to Bj?rk and Plaid to their credit, Funkst?rung has gained great international cult notoriety in music circles all over the world. They have collaborated with the likes of DMC World Champion DJ Craze and labels such as Chocolate Industries, I-F, MASK (a collaboration between Skam and Musik Aus Strom), and Compost have released 12"s to much acclaim and critical praise. Their complex song arrangements often consist of over 400 different sounds and effects which the New York Times described as "sparse, brittle, nearly atonal tracks (made) out of blips, static, buzzes, snippets of distorted sound and stray sampled voice", although they may be better characterized by their innate ability to mesh the crunchiest hip-hop and fractured beats with a delicate blend of melancholic knob-twiddling samples and warm synth tones to match. In describing the recent release of "Additional Productions", Spin Magazine might have put it best when stating, "Funkst?rung makes static sexy again." aren't show dates and such available on websites? no offense to those that post dates but i presume if we need to know about a particular show we can look it up. i'd rather read actual discussion about music rather than when so-and-so is playing. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? this is a joke right? how about no more posts whining about what should or should not be posted on these freakin' mailing lists?? i for one appreciate the announcements about show dates, even if it's in another city. i'm in nyc and yes, i do like hearing about some show in san francisco... if they have a good show in another city, and i don't have access to the same show in my city, maybe it'll get me thinking about organizing my own thing for my own community... --- don 'fats' winblad <mephatso1@yahoo.com> wrote:

A lot of the show dates for lesser known acts make me go out and try and find out about those people, thus adding to the range of IDM I listen to. And it helps me get an idea of what's hot when people review them. Speaking of which, does anyone who's seen Coil before have an objective view on their performance at Mutek? Did they play with or without John Balance? I noticed that they are going to be performing without him from a while and am trying to work out whether I should spend my hard earned going to see them in Birmingham. _muff._ xo on 10/6/03 11:43 pm the person going by the name l.m. at makeitup333@yahoo.com spake :

I happened to chance onto Coil at ATP in April wherever it was near Hastings. Apologies for not being a personality trainspotter I cant tell you who was in the group but it was just as dark, moody and tempermental as I expected it would be. and I did a timewarp back to 1987 during a momentary stoner flashback so perhaps this isnt an "objective view" nH At 11:55 pm +0100 10/6/03, Muffin wrote:

Oh, I was there too. I've seen Coil 6 [or 7, can't remember, too stoned] times in the last year. JB was at the ATP gig, but there has been talk of alcohol problems and him not being to perform for forthcomming events. I didn't see you at ATP. And if you are the same nethed who was at Ninja 3-4 years ago I'm sure I would have recognized you. _muff._

Oh yeah! Listening to the Hint album [Portakabin Fever, not really IDM, just IM] at the moment. It's lovely. Been collecting the 10"s waiting for this to come out. Beautiful for warm[ish] summer evenings in London with a little grass reefer _muff._ xo --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Or, god forbid, traveling for a show. I remember when people used to drive 14 hours to see Autechre play in Toronto because they weren't doing any American dates. When did everybody get so jaded and cynical? I'm totally with you on this one- all it does is expose me to interesting artists and tell me about tours I should try to see or even *gasp* BOOK! --- don 'fats' winblad <mephatso1@yahoo.com> wrote: < aren't show dates and such available on websites? > Yeah, I'm sure there are some sites in some cities, but I think there are very few that are very comprehensive about underground electronic music. For So Cal, Eric Frans & I do one called the SCIDM page. We try and cover LA, OC, and San Diego. In a region this large with so many events going on it's very easy to miss something good. Trust me I don't find all the information on just a few sites, I go to many sites and grab flyers when I'm at record stores and hear about them word of mouth. And face it there are a lot of promoters that don't do a good job getting the word out. So music lists are the best place to spread the word. When I see posts for events in NYC or elsewhere I don't automatically hit delete. That post might be about an artist I like, and it might lead me to search to see if they are playing other cities near me. I'm sure there are people that do that when I post about So Cal events. Hell, I drove 15 hours to see Dead Can Dance back in 93 or 94 (I can't remember). I was stunned when i saw Aphex Twin was playing a few days later. If it wasn't for ripping the poster off the wall and calling the hotline I never would have known Aphex Twin would be playing in a city near me a week later. In fact, hardly anyone knew Aphex Twin/Orbital/Vapourspace were playing in Arizona, because that event was SO POORLY promoted. It was a fluke that I found out and I told all of my friends. The LA show didn't even happen, I don't know what the circumstances were whether it was promotion or venue problems. A lot of artists have to tour to make a living, because record sales aren't always enough. So I don't see anything wrong with helping to get the word out, and believe me underground electronic shows need help getting the word out. I've been to many shows with really great artists performing and a low turnout. < no offense to those that post dates but i presume if we need to know about a particular show we can look it up. > No offense, but people take different things from the list. For some it might be IDM 101, for others it might be about trading or buy/sell music, shows, and numerous other things. Some people might just want to chat about gear and music production, deejaying, etc. I'm sure there are very few people that find every single topic interesting. < I'd rather read actual discussion about music rather than when so-and-so is playing. > Tell me when you find the "perfect list" that only discusses music that you are interested in. I'm subscribed to three music lists and none of them come close to what I'm looking for, but I occasionally find some interesting posts here and there.
