===== We send out summer greetings and bring you some news... +=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+ DEAN SANTOMIERI VIDEO FOR TERRY RILEY PERFORMANCE Dean Santomieri is providing video for a very exciting event here in Berkeley. On Friday June 6th at 8PM (Hertz Hall on the UC Berkeley Campus) Terry Riley will be performing an evening of his own music, including (for the first time in almost 30 years) A Rainbow in Curved Air Revisited. Dean will be providing a brand new video to accompany A Rainbow in Curved Air Revisited. This performance is part of Berkeley Edge Fest, a biennial new music festival, which runs from Thursday, June 5th through Sunday, June 8th. Tickets available by phone 510-642-9988, or at the Zellerbach box office. We have posted some snapshots and an exclusive live MP3 as part of our Tour Scrapbook. We are in the process of arranging more live dates for 2003, both locally (in the greater Bay Area) and in other areas of the US. Please stay tuned for further details. At long last SUB.TERRA is available for purchase. All the pertinent information can be found on the SUB.TERRA web page, including a number of audio samples and PDF booklet with commentary from the contributors. This full length CD features remixes/recyclings of Interstitial's epic "sub.terra" piece, a wonderful track constructed entirely from trumpet, with some parts acoustic and other parts heavily processed. Remix contributors include vidnaObmana, Vir Unis, Saul Stokes, Michael Bentley (eM), and, of course, the inspirator Interstitial (John Koch-Northrup). Keep your eyes open for reviews and airplay as SUB.TERRA makes its way out into the world! SUB.TERRA home page -> http://www.foundrysite.com/subterra/ +=-=+=-=+=-=+=-=+ NEW PROJECT: JONATHAN HUGHES - FLUID 2 Some may recall Jonathan's Fluid project from a few years ago, a set of 2 CDs which could be played together to create layered ambient pieces. Fluid 2 follows this idea with some new twists. This double CD will feature twelve tracks by Jonathan Hughes and twelve tracks by some of the most prominent names in the electronic music scene, including Tetsu Inoue, Ian Boddy, Twine, Mat Jarvis, Saul Stokes, Seofon, Susanne Brokesch, Dreamstate, Interstitial, Jussi Vaisanen, Dean Santomieri, and Michael Bentley/eM. In order for these tracks to work together all the tracks on Fluid are in similar keys, are six minutes long, and contain minimal rhythmic elements. By playing the two CDs simultaneously on separate CD players (preferably in random order) one can create dozens of unique composite tracks that are, in effect, virtual collaborations between artists who may have never recorded together. In fact it is this tradition of dinner gatherings at several local Korean restaurants that inspired the Bibimbap compilation. Bibimbap, the name of a wonderful Korean dish, simply means "mixing rice." Rice is placed in a stone or ceramic bowl and actively mixed with whatever other ingredients are available or desired, usually a variety of vegetables, bean sprouts and/or Kimchi, meat (chicken, beef, pork) and/or seafood, all topped with an egg and hot sauce. One unique feature to Tolsot Bibimbap is that the stone bowl, fired or heated before the food is put into it, continues the cooking process until the eating is at an end. In the spirit of this dish, the various artists involved contributed material to a pool of samples and then used something from this shared source (in addition to whatever new work they might provide) to create a new piece. The list of contributors includes Forrest Fang, Saul Stokes, Chris de Giere, M. Bentley/eM, Thermal, Ben Swire, Dean Santomieri, and Content Provider. I would like to open this note by thanking everyone who helped us along on our recent mini-tour. It was great to able to take our work into the live arena and to have an opportunity to meet folks and talk about art. I also really got a kick out of performing with Jonathan, Dean and Robert, and look forward to even more opportunities in the future. In fact, we are planning further live excursions, so if you know of appropriate venues and/or have recommendations and contacts in your area, please let me know. On a personal note, it has been an interesting year so far. After a longish break I have been able to immerse myself in creative work again, which has been great fun. Our live dates gave me the opportunity to show a new long form piece, Chronos and Kairos my first venture into video. It was exciting to work at combining my visuals and music, giving vent to many years worth of ideas as well as finding another outlet for graphic art. Plans are afoot for other pieces along this line as well as more live events at which to present them. Material continues to accumulate for This World and several other projects, but there never seems to be enough time to get to all the ideas and plans no matter how hard I work. Suffice to say that 2003 should see a new M. Bentley/eM release, though exactly what form it will take only time can tell! Please do drop us a note, we appreciate feedback both positive and negative, and it's nice to know there's someone out there! And now to summer dreams...
