LEAFCUTTER JOHN Mail-Out 16.May.03
Hi welcome (or welcome back) to the LEAFCUTTER JOHN mail-out. Bringing you
information on Performances, Events and Releases.
Album News I have just received manufactured copies of my latest album for
Planet Mu Records, and the release process has started in earnest. The
Housebound Spirit is set to go on the 7th of July. I m planning a release
party so keep your eyes peeled for updates.
Tonight! Tom Haines and I will be playing some of our Hydrophone recordings
and talking about the whole underwater sound thing on Tim Steiner's show on
Resonance FM 104.4 show starts at 8:00pm.
I ll be answering your questions in song at the Arts Café, 28 Commercial
St, London on the 8th June. The 4th Faith and Industry party will also
feature; Patrick Wolf, J-Z, Bookish, and Capitol K DJ. 3 quid to get in,
7:30 till 12.
This year I m part of a panel discussion at the Cybersonica festival which
will take place at the ICA on the 20th June. There will be short
presentations on the nature of manipulating sound within systems, both
natural and digital. Leading to a panel discussion about the sound
environment that electronic musicians and musician-programmers
find themselves in, and how they might respond.
Pannelists include:
"sound hacking - channelling electricity into sound"
Alex McLean (slub) and Tom Betts (nullpointer).
Tom Betts (
http://www.nullpointer.co.uk) is a musician and software
artist, making some excellent stuff like the bitmap sequencer
(
http://runme.org/project/+BitmapSequencer/) and some nice extensions to
pure-data.
Alex one half of Slub, who likes to make strange noises with
Perl scripts.
And me, I ll be demonstraiting and talking about my new magnetic pendulum
computer music interface.
I ll be doing a piece for PLACARD: LONDON HEADPHONES FESTIVAL, 19 JULY 2003
blurb follows:
The cream of London's underground electronic music scene is brought together
for a day and night of headphone performances.
Think of a festival in reverse. Performances will only be heard via headphones
in the venue, and broadcast to the world via the Net. For once, it's a perfect
opportunity for some focussed listening. Bring your own headphones: plug in,
switch on, tune out.
Audio and video performers include:
BitTonic (Bip-Hop, Law+Auder, Sprawl, Cybersonica)
Cassette41 / GR. (Coombe, Fat Cat)
Jonathan Coleclough (Staalplaat, Siren/Robot, ICR, Ora)
Peter Cusack (Kunstradio, Resonance FM, Your Favourite London Sounds)
Dual (Coombe, CEE, Dirter)
Jem Finer (Pogues, Longplayer, Artangel)
Frankie The Robot (SoxaN, Dorkbot, Plunderdelica)
Icarus (Output, Substance, N/A)
Gary Jeff (Eardrum, God, Mass, Rhys Chatham, Resonance FM)
LJ Kruzer (Uncharted Audio, AI, Kinky Voodoo)
Leafcutter John (Planet Mu, Plug Research)
Powerbooks For Peace (Alku, Alienation)
Si-cut.db (Bip-Hop, Fallt, Tennis, Sprawl, Cybersonica)
We're Breaking Up (Freedom Of The City, TwoThousandAnd)
. to name just a few. The full line-up is online at the placard website:
http://placard.slab.org.
Held in State51's E2 warehouse space, the festival also features some of the
capital's best underground video artists.
The event is organised by a tag team of London electronic musicians,
organisers
and promoters: 8bitrecs, not clickable, idoia, slub, disastronaut,
flow, .murmer, sonomu and the slow sound system.
This will be London's contribution to a global festival that has been running
in Paris, and more recently Tokyo, for the past six years.
When: 19 July, 12pm-12am
Where: State51, 8-10 Rhoda St, London, E2 7EF
How: Liverpool St, Old St, Aldgate East, Shoreditch tubes
What: Headphone audio, digital video, pay bar, record, food and merchandise

That s it for now see you soon.
