There was this project done by Yo-yo Ma and the Smithsonian Institution called 'The Silk Road' where they traveled along Marco Polo's supposed trade route and recorded native music along the way. It resulted in this compilation of music by Mongolian throat singers, Kazakh, Uyghur, Uzbek, Iranian, Turkish, and Afghan artists all playing instruments that I had no idea even existed. Really cool stuff. Some of it is really difficult to wrap our Western minds around...but if you appreciate music...I'm sure you'll enjoy it. It's kind of obscure but truly authentic. If you want, I would be happy to send you a copy. Conversely, on the other side of the spectrum, the 'Monsoon Wedding' soundtrack is actually pretty cool. It's tribal/middle eastern music set against beats. Let me know if you want me to send you 'The Silk Road' and good luck! i always liked the Badawi stuff on Asphodel from the late '90s, especially the final warning ep. http://www.asphodel.com/bio/badawi_.html i saw him play live once under a full moon on a pier in baltimore harbor. that was definitely one of the cooler performances i've seen.
