Muslimgauze? I really like Hussein Mahmood Jeeb Tehar Gass along with the Sufiq EP. They're both a little more upbeat and rhythmic than the more ambient muslimgauze stuff, and they're a step or two below the really noisy stuff. derek -- eggytoast.com - eggtastic.com ------ it's in your grocer's freezer --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Here are a few recommendations off the top of my head. Fela Kuti - You may be familiar with Femi Kuti (his son). In my opinion Fela is 10 times better. This Nigerian singer is the undisputed king of afrobeat. Luckily they've been re-releasing a lot of his stuff over the past few years. IF you can find his live album with Ginger Baker it's a good place to start. Ali Hassan Kuban - From Nubia to Cairo - This guy is the Egyptian James Brown. Very funky, catchy tunes. The Elektra Nonesuch Explorer Series is a good quality compilation series with some focus on African music among others. I have the Kenya & Tanzania: Witchcraft & Ritual Music CD which I love. It's a great way to get a taste of a lot of different styles. The Topic World Series on Tangent Records is another quality series. They have a number of CDs under the topic of Music in the world of Islam and they also have a good series on Africa. The Smithsonian also puts out great compilations under the Folkways Series. If you do some hunting around I'm sure you'll find something worth listening to. By the way, did anyone see the documentary "Save Our Sounds" about the Smithsonian and the Library of Congress and their archives of recordings? Not tribal or Middle Eastern but you may also be interested in checking out some of the gamelan music from Bali and Java. Beautiful gongs and percussions. I have a few recommendations here if you're interested. - Chris At 12:31 AM 5/20/03 -0700, d o n w i n b l a d wrote:

Hi all, Do U know Dzihan & Kamien ? try out Tearroom 2004 - Der Bauch (Turkey influence) with an amazing solo of Darbouc (is it english?) Etienne. from AMG(http://www.allmusic.com): The sound of Vienna-based duo dZihan & Kamien (pronounced Jay-hahn and Kammy-en) can easily be compared with down-tempo, soulful house sounds of Jazzanova, P'taah, or the Naked Music compilations. The duo hit popularity in 1996 with the single "Der Buch," which went big in European clubs and made appearances on several compilations. Their full-length album Freaks and Icons was released in late 2000. Vlado dZihann is originally from Serajevo and grew up in a prodimently musical household. As a drummer, dZihan became known in the local scene and recorded for the soundtrack of the film Arizona Dream, starring Johnny Depp and Faye Dunaway. He met his production partner, Mario Kamien, while studying in Vienna. Kamien, German born with both an Italian and Polish heritage, shared Zihan's interest of traditional music from the Near East, especially Turkey, and a love for Arabic strings. Combining their musical interests with their musical backgrounds, the two released Freaks and Icons on their label, Couch Records. The album focused on a down-tempo house sound, using samples from traditional Near East sources. Freaks and Icons was proceeded by three EP's, Tearroom 2004, [B]efore [A]fter, and Code: No Pork Please. The mix album Refreaked appeared a year later, followed by 2002's Gran Riserva. — Diana Potts --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
