===== Vertical Form News May 2003 What's in here? Sixtoo release another new album - plus live dates and critical acclaim. New remix album from Smyglyssna. New projects and lots of praise for Corker/Conboy. New 12" from The Rip Off Artist. Opiate EP back in stock. SIXTOO. Canada's finest electro-hip hop eminence and all round prince among men Vaughn Robert Squire (aka SIXTOO) is currently hoovering up critical acclaim for his splendid Vertical Form debut long player 'ANTAGONIST SURVIVAL KIT' - the album's out now. Check these informed opinions: "The love affair between electronica and hip hop is rarely consummated so successfully" 8/10 Jockey Slut "His vulnerability is his authenticity and all of this is what makes painfully beautiful albums such as Antagonist, so compelling, sincere and rare nowadays" The Wire "A recipe that works beautifully"' X-Ray "A world away from the depressingly formulaic music that has made hip hop a multi-million dollar concern" Metro "Think Eminem grappling with the grim landscapes of Method Man or Scaramanga" Uncut "Sixtoo's challenging lyrics have the power to demand attention" Hip Hop Connection "Beautifully realized" Rock Sound "Creeping and sliding through Hip Hop's murky underworld towards a place where genres are disrupted, minds are fucked with and paranoia's embraced, just remember - be at the ready!" DJ Magazine As if that wasn't achievement enough, Sixtoo will release another album - Instrumentals - on May 26th. A companion piece to Antagonist Survival Kit, this is the Vertical Form debut album shorn of the man's taut, paranoid lyrics. The CD version adds two tracks from the recent Outremont Mainline Runs Across The Sunset 12". Instrumentals throws new light on Antagonist's...' wonderfully crafted sonic terrain, blending choice samples, myriad acoustic instruments and a never-less-than-groovy subsoil of beats into an evocative, thought-provoking mix. Sixtoo will be further confounding expectations and thrilling SARS-free Canadians on these upcoming dates: May 30th - Mutek Festival Performance. Also Every Tuesday @ Blizzarts "School" with P-Love, Simahlak and Sixtoo Blizzarts, 2956a St. Laurent, Montreal. SMYGLYSSNA. Celebrated Swedish electronicicst Smyglyssna releases We Can Fix It (Remixes) on Vertical Form - street date: Jun 09th. This set of reconstructions sourced from 2002's We Can Fix It opus, finds Henrik Johansson (who is Smyglyssna) in the company of Soft Pink Truth (one half of San Franciscan electronic enfants terribles Matmos), underground hip hop star Boom Bip, Anticon luminaries Sixtoo and Restiform Bodies, along with Icelandic soundscapers Einoma and Brighton fusionists Fujiya & Miyagi. Smyglyssna also adds one remix of his own and one new solo track. The album's eclectic remit means everything from ambient soundscaping to crunching Krautrock beats and ethereal atmospherics get a look in, but nonetheless, it works as a smart, modernist album in its own right. Smyglyssna has been busy working his own remix magic of late, with choice reworkings for Sound Variation (check http://www.soundvariation.de) John Tejada and Ammon Contact of Soul Jazz/Eastern Developments fame. CORKER/CONBOY London's finest genre-melding duo Adrian Corker and Paul Conboy are back in the studio making inroads into their second album and have also started working on a new project with Tim 'Bomb The Bass' Simenon. The duo recently scored and curated the music for Antonio Bird's 'Rehab' for BBC Films. Tracks from Corker/Conboy's debut album, In The Light Of That Learnt Later, will feature in a forthcoming Channel 4 documentary, 'The Japanese Girl'. When they get a minute, Adrian and Paul are also doggedly reworking tracks for Vertical Form favourites Iso68. Meanwhile, In The Light Of That Learnt Later is still wowing magazine reviewers, radio programmers and, of course punters, from London to Lapland. Their choice blend of electronics, acoustics and all sonic stations in between have elicited fine words wherever people with ears have gathered. Like these, for example: "Their most inspired work yet" Straight No Chaser "A gorgeous amalgam of folkish guitars, intricate, eno-esque electronics and poignant, muted brass" MOJO "A faultless blend of streamlined grooves, african and latin rhythms, and acoustic melodies" The Wire "A world away from the bodge it and scarper attitude of many artists working with electronics" Logo "A superbly unhurried warm affair, the real sound of relaxation' DJ Magazine THE RIP OFF ARTIST. Prolific Californian electronic auteur The Rip Off Artist - aka Los Angelo Matt Haines - releases a brand new two- track 12" ahead of his upcoming Pet Soundsalbum unleashed in September). A stonking double-header, this latest release comprises two compelling sides of utilitarian digi-funk from the techno house top drawer. The A side is propulsive, mesmeric dance floor fare with the ROA's trademark wit at full throttle. AA-side Double Diamond also hammers along like a demented heartbeat machine, making woofers woof like big old hounds and tweeters shriek for joy. Prominent Norwegian hipster and Bjorn-of-all-trades Kim Hiorthoy provides the marvellous sleeve art. OPIATE Thomas 'Opiate' Knack's brilliant 4 track EP (VFORM012) is back in stock to coincide with his recently released Morr Music release. After a prolific 2001 that climaxed with Opiate producing three tracks for Bjork's groundbreaking Vespertine album, he released this much-admired four-track EP as a Vertical Form exclusive. Still exhibiting the classic Opiate hallmarks of rhythmic complexity and evocative melody, this also embraced a new, more digital direction and perfectly displayed the Dane's ever-evolving style. Rhythmic pulses, Zen-like ambiences and dubbed-out breakbeats flirt for attention, while a reworking of a track by Raster Noton's Alva Noton (aka Carsten Nicolai) rounds out proceedings in super-minimalist fashion.
