Phoenix has a great spot called Swell that has about 8 turntables set up
and bins of new vinyl so that people can check before they buy...and
apparently another larger store has recently opened with the same set-up
out there. I was very impressed. Don't know of any such place here in
LA.

I know that they exist, but they, at least in my experience, are often
the
exception rather than the rule. I've been in 3 record stores that allow
you
to listen to something -- one's a really cool shop in Minneapolis that
carried most everything (but took the cellophane off everything, too),
and
the other two were used shops that only let you listen to the used music
(as
it was already open), and they never had IDM stuff (let alone used IDM
stuff). Most record shops I've been in don't have listening stations,
or, if
they do, are often in use (as they generally have but a few), and even
fewer
actually carry things I'm interested in. I agree that I'm picky, but I
can't
be the only one. Can I? :D
I'd love for all shops to have that opportunity for buyers, but I've
only
experience it in a few shops.
I also know that more and more labels are putting samples of stuff
online,
and I think it's a great idea. MORE should! :)
Although I think they should also make it easy to get samples, instead
of
hiding it behind hundreds of abstract layers of webdesign wankery ;)
