This post might be late, I'm catching up on the old digests. Anyway, I'd strongly recommend a portable Sharp or Aiwa minidisc. They allow the record level to be changed while doing the recording. AFAIK in the Sony models you'll have to stop/pause the recording, change the level and start recording again. Changing the levels on the fly is a major feature if you're doing field recording, as the volume of the sounds can vary much so the recording level will need to change as well to get the best definition possible with clipping. They're wonderful in sound quality as well, but any modern minidisc recorder is good in terms of sound. There's an Aiwa model (AM-F80) that comes with a backlit, very handy if you'll be taping in the dark. Make sure the model you're buying has a microphone input, as some don't have one (or have only line input). Also, check the minidisc geeks at www.minidisc.org and related newsgroups, they'll give you a better help. -Paulo --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I think you can change the recording levels on some of the newer Sony models, but don't take my word for it, check the minidisc.org site and forums. I'd also remommend getting one with NetMD which allows you to save tracks directly from your PC ie. use your MD as an MP3 player.

Does anyone know if there's a portable MD player that has a digital output? Seems important if you want to upload your field recordings to your computer without losing sound quality in multiple D to A and A to D conversions. On top of that, I would think that with the crappy little unbalanced analog output that most MD players have your analog signal would be compromised before even getting to your soundcard. --- Glenn McClements <glenn.mcclements@openwave.com> wrote:

It doesn't look like they carry the model that I bought a year or so ago, but this is the closest- http://www.minidisco.com/minispecs/sharpst700-hd.html Mine is a Sharp and I couldn't be happier with it- I do all my bootlegging with it (with a Sony stereo lav mic that I picked up through the same website), do all my vinyl transfers with it, as well as field recordings. Mine has a digital out (USB port), as well as an adjustable analog input and adjustable digital input (1/8"). Super excellent. Does anyone know if there's a portable MD player that has a digital output?

Er, what? ... Do you mean yours has Digital _In_ via USB? I was actually doing research on this the other day, looking around minidisc.org, and I wasn't able to find _one_ modern (ATRAC 3.5+) portable OR deck with any kind of digital output (USB, Optical, SPDIF, whatever). Real disappointing... Did I miss something? I actually purchased an Archos Jukebox Recorder (MP3 w/ 20 Gig HDD) in hopes of finally ditching MD, but ended up taking it back. Not only does it not have a Mic level input (just line. you'd need an expensive preamp to get anything sounding acceptable), but it's overall recording quality was crrrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaapppppppppppppppppppp. Highly NOT recommended. --nm On Wed, 29 Jan 2003, Albers, Brian wrote:

It should be noted that this is a player and not a player/recorder Minidisco has their minidisc's split into player and recorder sections. I didn't find anything saying that this has a digital output. The usb interface will only download tracks onto the MD recorder not out of it. There must be one out there that'll do it. Maybe something aimed more at professionals rather them consumers. Otherwise it might be better to go with a portable dat recorder. A little larger but the digital output is well worth it IMO. --- StaticBeats <idm-list@staticbeats.com> wrote:

As far as I know there are *no* portable MDs with digital out as Sony are worried about piracy. There was a petition on minidisc.org a while back to ask Sony to add uploading to the netMD technology but nothing came of it. Though some of the hi-fi decks have digital out I think Glenn

There were only a couple portable minidiscs with digital out, the very first models I think. Of course they're useless by now, they use the early atrac versions with a very crappy sound. However there are numerous hi-fi decks with digital out, but you might as well buy a portable dat deck for that. The TCD-M1 competes with minidiscs in terms of size and portability. -Paulo --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
