peter's points are well taken. my point was that
because of the huge financials involved, there's no
way they're not trying to get as many subscribers as
possible as quickly as possible. they had to rustle up
more cash from investors recently b/c they burn
through so much $$.
however, the types of microgenres like idm, etc. could
be valuable to these services because 1) there's
really no other land-radio outlets for them (except a
college show here or there); 2) devotees would be more
likely to stay subscribed because the station(s) would
be filling a niche for these fans; and 3) idm's
demographics--in general, young, male, well
educated--are worth going for. perhaps when their
audience #s peak, they'll realize they need to go
after more adventurous listeners.
but yes, right now, it seems like there'd be little
reason for xm and sirius to care about idm-size
audiences, since they have to pin future investor $$
on growing subscriber base as broadly as possible.
