absofuckinlutely. Same window, different visual:
1. The Smiths - everything. Now I know how these
guys became my favorite band in 7th-8th grade...I just
listened to "louder than bombs" and have since pulled
out every album for a listen. "There is a light that
never goes out" is one of the best songs of all time
(for all you bleeding-heart dramatics).
2. ? and the mysterions - 96 tears. If you think
those NY kids of today have style (interpol, strokes,
blah blah blah), peep Mr. ?. Legally named "?," this
cat epitomizes the 60s garage band mod hipness which
seems to be such an influence all of a sudden...but
hell, what's to be improved on? This tune makes it
happen.
3. slowdive - souvlaki space station. Not exactly
non-IDM anymore, at least in its apparent influence,
this tune was absolutely everything to me when it came
out. Almost singlehandedly, this tune mapped out my
"effects aesthetic" for years to come. Bring back the
Reading Dub!
4. joy div. - dead souls. Can't claim to have been
into these guys while they were in existence as joy
division--hell, they formed before I was born and died
before I could speak an intelligble sentence; but like
any good dark youth I got exposed to Ian C. and the
crew. This song is somehow special for me, I guess
just nostalgically, but it seems like each element in
this song works really well with the others--each part
rocks. Turn on the bright lights, and see some
epileptic glory.
5. Midnight Star - no parking on the dancefloor.
Keerist, get a copy of this album if you don't have
one already! Absolute classics here. Electro and
slow jams stand side by side in early 80s style--as
cheesed out as possible. See the future of electro in
its nascent state....
6. Kraftwerk - computer world. Yeah, not exactly
non-IDM here. I rate computer world as my favorite K.
album, regardless of the experimentalism of
"Radioactivity" and legion of "trans-europe express."
Computer world rules all, not exclusively b/c of its
Huxlean foreshadowing of our current powerlessness
(ha! IDM content sneaks in there).
Ben
np - black moon - make munne
