I've also heard the argument made somewhere that the "intelligent" in IDM
was thought to have an almost racist connotation for a while. Has anybody
else heard this as well?

It's so funny that the "I" in IDM causes such a
controversy. I even remember reading something from
Warp about how calling the music "intelligent" is
bollocks...first off: calling something "intelligent"
does not imply anything about any other music not
immediately referred to. People constantly invoke
that argument against the term IDM, which is indirect
and avoids the subject. The subject is the music
we're talking about, autechre, aphex, Rephlex records,
Schematic, etc. etc., not drum and bass, house,
psy-trance or anything else. Saying Autechre is IDM
infers absolutely nothing about any band except
Autechre.
Second off, I know being called "intelligent" is
uncool, and has loads of unappealing connotations.
But fuck, intelligence as intelligence, by itself, can
also be viewed as a positive thing once in a while,
no? Loosen up, people. It's OK to listen to music
that some call "intelligent (dance music)." A person
can't even really infer anything about you, let alone
your intelligence, from the fact that you listen to
IDM. So relax, if you consider intelligence such a
taboo epithet.
