Well here's a proposed solution to the "intelligent" problem that arises
from the appellation IDM: now, it's clear that no one really likes the fact
that this genre of music is called intelligent, because it implies some
pretentious on the part of the listener or the part of the composer, or
both. So how about we go ahead and say that IDM stands for
nothing? That's right, nothing.
This is not without precedence. For example, DVD technically stands for
nothing but DVD. Now, certain companies will tell you it stands for
Digital Video Disc, and others will say Digital Versatile Disc, but the big
companies never agreed on a unique standard, and so today DVD stands
alone. The same goes for the middle name of Harry S Truman - it stands for
S, and nothing more. We all know by now what kind of music IDM represents,
and I think the music stands on its own as the definition of IDM, just as
"rock" cannot not be broken down into a description of its represented
music, we all just know what "rock" is. The same goes for punk, new age,
jazz, rap, etc. - we only know what kind of music these genre names
describe because of experience, not from the words themselves. True, each
of these words has an interesting derivation and back story, and so does
IDM. But I propose that herein out, when we think of the word, we should
think of it as an atom rather than an acronym.
