On the Christmas shopping tip, I have an MPC 2000, and am thinking about going to a software sampler for my Mac (G3, yeah I know I'm behind the curve). Does anyone have any recommendations, or thoughts on the advantages of software samplers versus MPCs, etc? t --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Its going to be tough to run a soft-sampler on a G3. Im currently trying to cure Battery, Native Instrument's percussion-centric sampler, of its sputtering and coughing on my 9600 with a 400mhz G3 upgrade.... As far as a recommendation, KONTAKT by NI is pretty much the shit. Although I've recently been test-driving Emagic's exs24 and its right up there with KONTAKT [if you use Logic]. Honestly thought, there is no good software-analog to an MPC for ease of use as a stand-alone composition tool. [You can now emulate the MPC drum pads with the new Akai MPD-16 percussion pad controller, but there is still the need for a sequencer and sampler package as well as the machine itself, midi interface, audio I/O etc...] The MPC was designed to do one thing very quickly and easily, sample and sequence drum and percussion lines and phrases. You can do all of these things in software, but not without an extra level of complexity. At any rate.....If you are in the SFBAY area, we are having a free KONTAKT clinic next wednesday with Paul Weissman from Native Instruments. Native Instrument's Kontakt is the shiznat, however....a G4 processor is "recommended". That doesn't mean you can't run it on your G3, it just means it'll be a bit slow (I know because I am running it on a G3 myself). If you have at least 512 Ram and a 350mhz G3 or higher you should be ok. Here's a good link if you have questions on Kontakt: www.worldofsampling.co.uk/Kontakt.shtml There is also Unity DS-1 by Bitheadz. I actually have never used this soft-sampler, but I have heard good things about it. It has been out now for over two years so I would venture to say that the kinks have been worked out (unlike Kontakt which has only been shipping for a few months). Here's the Bitzhead web site: www.bitheadz.com/frame.html Good luck (hold on to that MPC, you'll be sorry if you don't-trust me) -Sean ^(|_|)^
