Robert, http://force-inc.com/theory/ That is an obvious place to start, IMO.. excellent writtings from Achim Szepanski, Philip Sherburne, Terre Thaemlitz et al. ..and if you're not acquainted (!?) with some of the music that's been coming out from the Force Inc family of labels over the past few years, I'd suggest doing some serious catching up. (especially Mille Plateaux + Ritornell) See also: 12k/L-ne, Intr-version, Fallt, Alien8/Substractif, Basic Channel.. kh4n/. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Nov 2002 09:31:44 -0000 To: <idm@hyperreal.org> From: "Robert Goldie" <robert.goldie@teion.co.uk> Subject: I need some help for my thesis. . . . . OK, Choice #1... Look through 16,000 pages for the information you want. or... Choice #2... Pool the knowledge of a group of people already intimate with the material. I think I'd try choice #2 and then move on to choice #1 if needed. Look, it wasn't even my post originally... My point was to say "lighten up" because next time it may be 'you' asking a question with the hope that someone else might bother to answer it without biting your head off. If you are annoyed by the person asking the question, ignore the question and let someone else with a little more tact and patience answer it if they choose to. As far as I'm concerned that post was WAY more on topic than, I dunno... the IDM-est Car.... -matT nashville.tn On Thursday, November 7, 2002, at 12:31 PM, Brett Dietsch wrote:

i was trying to be heavily sarcastic in that post, but apparently missed my goal and sounded like a complete asshole instead. i agree with the "if you dont like whats being said, ignore it," and usually only respond like this in threads that already have a fairly high flame-factor. arrogant elitism versus people searching for knowledge will normally cause people responding with things like "eat cock, use google," which is normally about as helpful in cases like this as asking a high school music teacher. (if they still teach music in school) i would post info about who one could talk to, which was asked in the first post, but i have no info. that being said, the IDM-est cat is the plymouth acclaim. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

couldn't agree more that some day i might find myself asking a question that someone might flippantly and unfortunately reply to me in the same impolite and offhanded manner that i applied to the original post, buuuuuuut... i guess what i reacted to was that i thought it was kind of strange that someone would be eager to write their thesis on a subject with which they didn't have a basic familiarity. i guess i get annoyed at the tendency in academia to jump on whatever aesthetic is the new thing and run with it. i'm not accusing the original poster of doing this in any fashion. it's entirely possible that he's got a very thorough familiarity with the subject and he's just looking for bases he might not have covered. whatever, it's not even that big of a deal. if he had asked for people to give their opinions about a particular statement, theory, whatever, i don't think i would have replied in the same way. it's just... and maybe i'm wrong about how this poster is using the word thesis... but for something that's so important in the school year, shouldn't it be necessary or at least desirable to love what you're going to be spending the next few months researching? out of curiosity... if the original poster is reading this and has read this far: are you arguing for/against the notion of originality in minimal techno? how do you think the 4/4 rhythms effect the music's ability to be original? what about the fact that aside from more open ended software like reaktor or max/msp it is dependent on plugins that come and go as fads and reappear over and over again in different tracks (and even with max and reaktor most of the objects people write end up sounding the same because it takes a much higher proficiency in synthesis and other areas in order to be able to make things truly original)? Is the dub influence strictly aesthetic or is there some other factor such as a political one? what does it mean that this music, which was originated by poor black kids in lower income areas at times when old analog and pre-digital gear could be purchased cheap, is now affilliated with this white, bald, chinstroking, posh, intellectual sense of detatchment? how can originality even be measured at all in music? is originality merely structural is it concept oriented or is it emotional (or maybe all three or none)? i think it could definitely be an interesting thesis. i wonder what your focus will be, as it now occurs to me that there was nothing in your original post to suggest that you were going to focus solely on minimal techno, and if that is the case, my sincerest apologies for my harsh words. regards, gregory ===== )the fawn )"i thought when i started playing )shows i'd meet a lot of really cool )people, but most of the people i've )met just want me to copy software )for them" __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
