Not probably a topic for IDM, but the Hammerfall DSP system is sensitive
to the motherboard chipset and will have problems with pops, clicks and
breakups on some boards. The worst offenders are the Via chipsets.
Intel chipsets tend to do the best, because they have the most correct,
highest-throughput PCI implementation. Others people have used with good
luck are the AMD 761 chipset, the Nvidia NForce chipset, and the SiS 735
and 74x chipsets.
It is not unusual even on a perfectly functioning system to get sound breakups
during the opening of softsynths, but once they're loaded, you shouldn't have
any problems until you max out your CPU. And you do need to tune the ASIO
latency for your system -- running 3 msec latency really taxes a computer.
The only time you really need low latency is when you want to play softsynths
live from a keyboard; in my case I generally use 6 msec latency when doing
live stuff, and 23 or 46 when I'm tracking or mixing.
Again without knowing what hardware you're running on I can't begin to
guess what your problem is.
