Ah ah ah! I'm not familiar with the other artists you mentioned, but mr. manuva, although born and raised in south london, had very jamaican parents, and his rapping style is very similar to other jamaican artists. I'm talking about the slow, vowelly, typical "british" accented type of rap. Sure, mr. Manuva certainly qualifies as "a british rapper," but I wouldn't call him "british rap." derek ------- eggytoast.com ------- kills germs on contact --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Gor blimey, leave i' ou', ma'e, know wo'a mean... same pianah loop playin' oveah an' oveah, inni' ;-) Marrying po-mo barrow-boy Eastender/Essex-isms with knowingly cheesy sub-garage beats and frankly tedious keyboard or orchestral loops does not add up to 'British hip hop'. Can't understand why the critics went apeshit over this and gave it a Mercury Music Prize or some such. Or perhaps I can, all too easily. Queasy listening. alan/beyond...sound Quoting Aaron D Meyers <adm226@nyu.edu>:

Not to keep the thread going, but its still hiphop from the UK, any which way you look at it. He certainly comes off as a UK MC to me. Just like jungle MCs (who often are mimicing or came from jamaican soundsystem culture) do to. As to the overall arguement though, i could care less. - cutups ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joel Fever" <joel_fever@yahoo.com> To: "doeznot allow" <skitzobiatch@hotmail.com>; <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Tuesday, October 29, 2002 8:57 PM Subject: Re: [idm] british hip hop

Well, like I said, he's certainly a british rapper, but he's not very representative of typical british rapping. What I mean when I say british rapping is rapping with the typical british accent (of various types, whether it be liverpuddian, cockney, scottish, etc.). I think mr. manuva does great stuff, but *sheesh* people. I was complaining about the likes of massive attack, not "people who are born and raised in the UK and rap about UK issues but don't sound british."
