2 things that ruined my weekend- Meat Beat Manifesto- RUOK? Should've been called 'Music for Stoners.' Gone are any hints of the big beat acid-y techno that has been his trademark over the past handful of albums, and instead we get an album of slow- and mid-paced instrumental dub. Boring. Nothing brave about it. I'm thinking he won't be broadening his fanbase with this one, but rather losing those of us Meat Beat fans who are now longing for the propulsive sounds of Actual Sounds and Original Fire. MBM is now relegated to the same status as NIN in that I won't even bother with the studio albums any more, but I'll keep my fingers crossed for the remixes. Kid606- $ 7" series I picked up a few of these over the weekend. Not good. Miguel in full on hip hop mode and not even close to realizing the potential that we heard on his 'Attitude' track. Novelty points for his track 'War Bombs,' which is a fairly literal cover of some old Slayer song with the guitars replaced by a Commodore64 type synthy sound and Tom Araya replaced by some hyper-speed rapper. Haven't heard any of the B sides yet. 2 things that salvaged my weekend- Com.a / Duplo Remote split 12" on Fat Cat The Com.a tracks are killer. Gritty crunchy hardish beats with a healthy dose of glitch as well as melody. And how nice is it to hear some idm tracks at 5, 6 and 7 minutes? Reminds me of Shocking Hobby in that way. Duplo Remote I hadn't heard before, but those tracks too are petty neat, except those are the 2 and 2 1/2 and 3 minute tracks that we've all become too accustomed to hearing. Multiplex- Pighaus Frequencies on Toytronic Way mellow for my tastes, but still a pleasant listen. For fans of Boards of Canada, Telefon Tel Aviv, or L'usine's floatier tracks. Anybody know how the remix cd is?

Hey, thanks for the review. I had been contemplating picking this up but had held off after reviewing my previous MBM material (and realizing that the hit to filler ratio is pretty equal, tipping actually towards filler) and figured I'd wait until the reviews came in. As I was much more of a fan of the edgy ultra-percussive stuff (like, well, basically the stuff like the two tracks that they made "singles" from off of actual sounds and voices), I'll happily give this one a miss. Speaking of which, has anyone picked up the Tino's Breaks "Halloween Dub" release? No, err, "acid again" and "prime audio soup," and a few other tracks off Actual Sounds. After picking up some of the earlier albums, I decided that Jack Dangers really can't rap nor sing, so stopped buying back catalog stuff. In fact, he along with the atrocious massive attack have proven to me that brits just can't rap. The less british rap I own, the better. In fact, that goes for all "vowely" languages, including French (especially french!). Ugh! YOU NEED MORE CONSONANTS! You can't say "ooohhhwww" and have it ever sound good in a rap. So, I just like the stuff he's done for other people and the few tracks he'd had remixed by really great artists. I mean, the first 4 Tino's Breaks LPs were fantastic, and some of the compilation stuff Mr. Dangers has done under his own name is really good. i agree, british mcs do suck.. but while jack dangers is irritating on the microphone, he is a genius with a sequencer and a sampler... as far as being industrial or whatnot, mbm has always been an anomaly.. its too hip hop for goth industrial kids and too industrial/goth for hip hop heads.. its not quite danceable for ravers, and there are too many beats for ambient listeners.. too poppy for underground purists, and too underground for the mainstream.. meat beat is a genre on its own, and thats what makes it quality In a message dated 10/28/02 5:58:05 PM Eastern Standard Time, eggy@eggytoast.com writes:

I agree. The main reason Meat Beat got lumped in with "industrial/goth" was because the labels they released their earliest work on (Sweatbox in the UK, Wax Trax in the US) were best known for that sort of music. I interviewed Dangers a few years ago and asked him about the association, and he said that he never really understood it. He was more interested in hip-hop and acid house than goth and industrial. Not that I have anything against goth and industrial, mind you. It's a lot of what I was listening to back in the late 80s, and it's what led me to MBM. But it's not the proper genre to be putting Meat Beat into. as some people are wont to do.
