Nuff respect to everyone who responded to the sincere poster who wanted to
know what we've listened to before idm.
However, beware of the reasoning that would lead one to think that 15-20
responses represent the idm list.
It was funny to see the post ( " I am SHOCKED, SHOCKED by the similarity of
these responses. No wonder I disagree with you people all the time. Here's
my answer to my own question:" ) . With a list of close to 1000 people all
over the world representing a variety of upbringings, cultures and musical
tastes, a small response by the more vocal side of the idm list is hardly
the last word. That being said, there do seem to be homogeneous lines from
industrial, metal, rave, etc. This says more about age brackets, music
marketing, and youth subculture than it really does about music.
I discovered idm in '92 or '93 with the AI comps but more specifically,
Surfing on Sine Waves, one of a very few records I still listen to from
those days, most everything else got tossed . Before that? All music from
every place and from every time. Its still that way for me.
