This showcase of experimental punk feels nothing like the embarrassing,
almost crotchety cynicism emanating from punk? at last month's Clear Channel
throwback-fest "Inland Invasion." Take Books on Tape, for example. Beyond
the fact that they're cool enough to identify themselves as "from North
Hollywood," BoT is really just one guy (Todd Drutin) with a couple of pieces
of equipment, layering beats upon beats and eventually achieving rhythms and
melodies from virtually nothing. Experimental Dental School, from Oakland,
do a similar death-metal-meets-disco march, but pummel their junkyard
instruments with microphones and dildos, ? la Jimmy Page and his bow. Total
Shutdown promises "rainbow violence cocaine jazz," while the Sharp
Ease/Centimeters hybrid New Collapse engenders carnival/car-crash weirdness.
John Wiese's pure noise will probably cause a laptop meltdown, and crusty
punks Canaries Kept Quiet Kill (which is a true statement) just might hit
you up for change after the show. Now, isn't that the way it's supposed to
be? (Wendy Gilmartin)
(please note that Experimental Dental is unable to make the performance and
will not be on the bill, sorry)
