refreshing thread, so much so that I will briefly lift the veil of lurk-mode. Releases: Ambulance 7" - Planet-Mu (particularly 'Snakes'): Definitely on of the most refreshing things I have heard in a while. Production is spot-on, sporting an extremely 'full' sound of rocktronica (I love making up genres that sound really stupid). Really, it's more like an audio puzzle, you know, like they started with a proper tune, then pulled these little pieces out, pitch shifted the melodies (think audio-rubberbands) and moved them around to create one of the years freshest singles. Played 'Snakes' almost everynight before bed since I got it. Awwwww.... Yunx - The Interview EP - Yunx They seem to be getting closer and closer to reaching their sound with every release. Fuck. Reminiscent of old B12 with that dope 'we aren't from Detroit but we can make wicked tunes regardless' attitude. Yunx are (and have been) blurring the lines of what dance music can (and should) be for a while, and this record is merely another testament to that. This 12" is quite a bit more chilled out than previous efforts with a couple downtempo/dubby numbers on it. Funny I have never seen any talk of them on this list. Consider this your wake-up call. Rjd2 - Deadringer - Def Jux I try to avoid comparisons, but this album reeks of the quality of DJ Shadow. A nice mixture between Endtroducing and Brainfreeze! comes to mind, but better. Rjd2 offered up a nice counter-point to the last El-P album here; a bit more lighthearted, nostalgic and pretty and all that. Can't say I care too much for the MC's, but there are only 3 tracks with flows over top. This man is deadly with a sampler... lately: anything i can find by Quinoline Yellow (ie Smak, compilation tracks from Cottage Industries, RND .639925237668 and i think theres a Japanese comp too from Com.A et al)... EU - Tuner ep - i had not listened to any of the so-called Ae clones from the former USSR until about three months ago, and i have to say i was stunned by this and most of Fizzarum's stuff, esp. Ursa Majoris... Bitstream - Retreat Pod 12", Incubator 12", Stream 1 7" - believe any hype you hear about these guys, they are all that, electro-y idm that kicks ass... Phako - Bolnes Shipyards & Engineering Co ltd - the first track is IMHO mediocre, maybe it'll grow on me, but the rest is great. errrr, i should say the 1st track on the 12" cuz the cd's different... Luke Vibert - mix from One World - goes all over the place, some of his own stuff from planet mu, teh 808 State remix by AFX, great electro-ish stuff, old school drumnbass, goes from that "Johnny" track to one about "Ricky," laughed my ass off first time i listened to it... MEAM - from the Skam Records One World special - the M, the E, the A, the M... who the heck are these guys??? Wevie Stonder - Drawing on other peoples heads - "that was the sound of MURDER..."
