When's it gonna stop? When are artists who I formerly loved gonna stop putting out terrible albums? First it was Autechre going complete abstract wankery with Confield, then Jack Dangers puts out that EP with nothing but his B material, then Speedy J puts out a cd of some of the most un-brave sequence of loops after a career of producing nothing but brave music, and now Underworld. Their new cd A Hundred Days Off may or may not be out in stores yet. Either way, it's crap. It seems they got all the good music out of 'em in their past three albums. This new one is all all total Euro-cheese disco techno shit that you expect to hear at a shopping mall. Gone are all the hard, dark edges and all the hookiness of Beaucoup Fish, gone is the journey through the songs of Second Toughest...and Dubnobass..., gone are all the textures, gone are all the interesting bits. I suppose in a live context some of these songs will be fun. On cd they fall flat, especially the couple of really slow "groovy" downtempo numbers. If you like their early 12"s for JBO (the MMM Skyscraper... one with 4 versions, the Rez 12"), then you might like the new album. For me, it's sad to say, but the album is worthless. What's next- will Gridlock put out an album of all 12 bar blues standards? Will Not Breathing go reggae?

Well... I like Confield, and I haven't listened to anything by Speedy J, but I have to agree with on the new Underworld album. To be honest, I was a bit pesimistic about them being able to pull off another decent album after Mr Emerson left. What got me is that a lot of the press talks about how they've moved away from the dancefloor with this album. If anything, I would say the reverse is true. I wasn't that impressed with Beaucoup Fish, but it defnitely had it's moments (particularly the live versions on everything everything) and it had the trademark underworld sound... 2nd Toughest remains on my desert island list. I downloaded it, but I've deleted it already. Maybe it'll grow on me when it's inevitably thrashed on the radio, but I can't see it... Richard Albers, Brian wrote:

Gee whiz. I come back to the IDM list after several years, just looking for some recent record recommendations, and I find the place is just as pretentious as when I left. Certain IDM names were formative for me when I was starting to make tracks, just discovering what was possible. Now find that if an artist is trying oh so hard to be "Intelligent," my bullshit meter goes off in an instant. Give me a solid, uplifting groove any day of the week. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that the very qualities in music that set off my bullshit meter are the same ones upon which praise is heaped daily on this list. Yet, there's good IDM out there. I hope I can find it despite all the fetishization of the new that appears to be a constant feature of the scene. You see, music is simultaneously both the most important thing in the world and absolutely trivial. When you realize that, you see that underworld have no obligation to blow you away with every release. Boards of Canada have no moral duty to make sure geogaddi is what you expected. One day several years ago, I bought the Richard D. James album and Orbital's in sides on the same day. I thought the orbital was crap, but Aphex blew my mind. Within a year, I felt no desire to listen to RDJ any more, but in sides still -- in 2002 -- moves me and touches me. It's easier to get attention if you're avant-garde, but it's only in very rare cases that the work stands up to repeated hearings. It's the death of all the arts these days. The pressure to get attention is so great that there's no room to be still and quiet and make your art from a place of calmness and wholeness. So I'll try IDM-m for awhile. Have fun, and remember, "The arguments are so petty because the stakes are so low." Au revoir, James At 22.22 +0200 8/21/02, Peter Heide wrote:

Well I sort of agree, but would like to add, that when you consider the large amount of crap music getting released these days, it's not *that* bad. But when you have already released something like MHTRTC, and the BoC Peel Sessions, I feel you have set the bar very high, and if you fail to live up to the standard you have already set for yourself, then you have (in a way) failed. In this sense, (imho) Geogaddi is a failure. _________________________________________________________________ Join the world?s largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I personally like Geogaddi more than MHTRTC at this point. MHTRTC in retrospect now sounds too "samey;" the lack of variation in the songs stands out significantly more after hearing Geogaddi, and although MHTRTC might work better on the dance floor, for listening and home use I'm spinning Geogaddi significantly more often. derek ------- eggytoast.com ------- kills germs on contact --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
