the only Oval i have is Ovalprocess... over the years i have learned to love this more and more... listened again last night, while going to sleep to it, i swear it has never sounded more contemporary (his use of hazy modem sounds that slowly plod along and the immensely thick hidden melodies are truly astounding). i don't own any other Oval. should i be happy with the i have, or is there much more to explore in his sound? i ask because he seems to retread a lot of ground from what i've heard. likewise, i've got Fennesz's Endless Summer, which i have enjoyed immensely. i would love some suggestions on other work of his that hold up to this one, especially melodically, but am not particularly interested in hearing simpler versions of these tracks, though my understanding is that Fennesz's power is great, and he has worn many different hats. cds are very expensive/honesty is appreciated. peas, nat np: Cottage Industries 1 _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

the only two things fennesz has done that even come close to touching the perfection of 'endless summer', in my opinion, are his two track cd 'fennesz plays' which i think is out on moikai or something, but maybe it got reissued on another label... i don't know, not too hard to find though and well worth the effort because he "covers" the songs 'don't talk (put your head on my shoulder)' by the beach boys and 'paint it black' by the rolling stones. while fennesz asserts that 'don't talk' is a very faithful cover and that an acapella vocal track fits over his song, i've yet to track down an acapella track to check it out for sure... though i know with certainty that paint it black is only a cover in the most rudimentary conceptual sense. and also his new split 12" with main out on fatcat... while i'm not a big main fan, fennesz returns to that soupy syrupy beautiful sound he's got on endless summer with the melodies now a bit darker and the drones a bit more longing and pensive. i don't really know too much about oval, though i do own ovalprocess... i know someone who knows him though and they told me about how the music is made... and while i'd like to be able to merely appreciate the end result, when you damn your album oval/process// you draw a bit of attention to it and obviously want people to talk about it or whatever... so i don't like automatically generated music is what i'm saying. i think it's a novel application of programming saavy to be able to construct a program that uses your input to construct its own songs, but i think it's more a testament to the remarkable artistic potential of machines than it is to the unwavering ingenue of the artist. gregory

Wouldn't it be possible to code the app with nuances that make it personalised, that reflect the disposition of the creator? In fact how could software *not* embody the designers conception of music/sound/composition? This varies so much from person to person, let alone musician to musician. The end result would have character just like the body of work of any (good) more traditional musician has character. Regardless, there are folks much more qualified to talk about these matters on this list than me. I just had to add .my .02.. ~g np - naw - gibberish -- Greg Smith http://www.laiad.com "Dynamic moves based off ignorance tend to be better than passive moves based on fear." - IM Jeremy Silman --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Try Tim Hecker's "hurt me, hurt me, do it again." This album led me to "endless summer" ~ it's darker, more brooding, but I think it's a real winner. I think I prefer it to "summer" actually. Or, I did until it, endless summer, and a few others in a stack all wandered out of ear shot, sometime in the last month. :( aaron ghede@well.com http://www.quietamerican.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

If you like _Endless Summer_ and a slight Oval influence, it'd probably be worth checking out the Désormais _Climate Variations_ release on the intr-version label (if you haven't already). There's a review at www.electronicmusicreviews.com (look in the 'Archived' section under D). alan/beyond...sound Quoting Aaron Ximm <ghede@well.com>:

I only own Oval's "Systemich" cd, and I love it. lots of those little hidden melodies, most tracks are just fantastic. More during the "skippy cd" phase than the "generated through my own software" phase, and I like it a lot more compared to the mp3's I've heard. derek ------- eggytoast.com ------- kills germs on contact --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
