Not the best place to ask, but a starting point nonetheless. Does anybody have some recommendations for Indian pop or bhangra, hopefully of recent vintage? And not that reconstituted Bollywood compilation BS. I want some good solid albums. I'm willing to check out older 60s stuff as well, but once again, I'm looking for albums, not comps. the ananda shankar experience and state of bengal have a great album together. it's called 'walking on'. it's on the real world label. i really like it. some of it is plain old worldy, but a lot of it has some deep cardamom-tinged funk. i love this stuff. it came out in 1999. and amusingly, we just happened to be listening to this in the houseness kitchen right now as i read your posting :) -rachel (aka dj pie) piesarenice.net -- <iNoah> sed -ne '/^$/!{H;x;s/\n//p;s/.*//;h;d;};/^$/{x;s/.*//;H;}' ${1+"$@"} On Sat, 17 Aug 2002, Thomas Millar wrote:

I second this, although am not taken with Maha Maya, which is a collection of remixes of material on Shri Durga. But both Shri Durga and Krishna Lila are excellent, highly recommended. You may want to take a look at other artists on the Six Degrees label, as the output there is usually very good. Have a number of compilations and samplers that may help if you enjoy the Cheb i Sabbah.

Well, there's Joi, Shiva Chandra, Nitin Sawhney, Transglobal Underground, Natasha Atlas - quite a recent compilation (I know you specified NO comps!) is: V/A ORIENTATION - New Asian & Oriental Sounds released on Poets Club Records in Nov. 2001. Quite an enjoyable tongue-in-cheek comp from last year on the Outcaste label is "The Bombay Jazz Palace" although you might call that "And not that reconstituted Bollywood compilation BS." :-) Obviously there's also Anokha (Talvin Singh) and the pretty good Sony V/A from '97 titled Eastern Uprising : Dance Music f/t Asian Underground. And lots, lots more that would fall into the 'world music' category. i think the original poster was looking for older Indian music, which i too would certainly be interested in any suggestions... i can say that Dil Se (immense recent Bollywood epic) has some of the most slammin' indian tuneage i've ever heard...it's classic elements mixed into indian pop. also, i couldn't recommend the movie more... though it's three hours, it's more than sensual enough to keep you awake.. so, who out there can tell us where to find proper oldschool indian classics?! i, myself, am not looking for the Muzlimgauze of India...

this is very cool to see an appreciation of the indian musical vibe... i myself am working on some droney raag (raga) stuff... not like the ragga jungle, but indian classical raga (forgive me for those that know all about this)... but with tabla beats and dub bass... and the lead instrument being my guitar. i've studied some of the raag scales and melodic forms. and it will be as much of an actual raag as possible... but with the electronic element of dub bass... i'm curious if anyone out there would be interested in hearing something like this. it would be lengthy melodic improvisations (with a definite melodic framework of course) over droney repetitive dub bass tabla beats. i'd love some suggestions on the kinds of atmospherics that people would like to hear over something like this. i've already got some groovy vibraphone sounds going thanks pv ----- Original Message ----- From: "tom weibrecht" <tweibrecht@juno.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Saturday, August 17, 2002 3:32 PM Subject: Re: [idm] RFI: Indian music
