Just like asking after the first "rock & roll" song, there's really no good non-hysterical answer to that one -- though the two big drum'n'bass labels, Moving Shadow and Suburban Base, both started in 1990. Also remember that breakbeat DJs like Grooverider and Fabio were making drum'n'bass mixes out of material that *wasn't* really drum'n'bass long before this... Any of the below are fine -- as long as you're not trying to distinguish hardcore from jungle from drum'n'bass: just pick your choice... Shut Up & Dance - Derek Went Mad (1990) 4hero - Mr. Kirk's Nightmare/Journey From the Light (1990-91) Blame - Music Takes You (1991) Innerzone Orchestra - Bug in the Bassbin (1991) 2 Bad Mice - Bombscare (1992) Origin Unknown - Valley of the Shadows (1992) DJ Hype - Roll the Beats (personal fave)

Depending on what you define as d'n'b, I think a lot of the old-school hardcore would be classed as d'n'b.... So you're looking at people like 2 Bad Mice, who's back catalogue in 92-93 was already huge, I'm sure they pushed hardcore towards the more Jungly/DNB sound, and helpd define new genres for breakbeat based music... I'd love to hear what other people say on this one... --- some say that it's the aphex twin's remix of "spotlight" on wagon christ's "redone ep" true/false? --- false. There are two strong possibilities in my book, but really in the end, who cares, because dnb/jungle (as well as hardcore) built on so much that preceded it. It's almost like asking where the first breakbeat came from. That being said, here are the two records that are contenders to what you are looking for. Lenny D-Ice - We are IE LTJ Bukem - Demons Theme Both made in 1990, Bukems record came out slightly after 'We are IE' as he played it on dubplate for a while before starting up Good Looking to put it our formally in '91. No matter your opinion of LTJ and putting aside his business ethics for the moment, 'Demons Theme' was definitely one of, if not the most influential dnb/jungle/hardcore records of all time. Hey peeps, I'm gonna try a new format for the email this time, here goes: 1. Record Camp Events: Tuesdays (this one) She Ra and Cutfaster bring back the IDM at Open Air. Cheap Drinks and oldschool idm beats mashed up with some nasty pop classics. Tonight's guest is the almighty Chung King XXXpress (ker-pow!), protec' yo' neck son! 121 St marks place, from 7 - 10 (happy hour til 9) Upcoming Event: Record Camp presents: Merck vs. Sound-Ink vs. Shadetek @ the Triad Theatre on September 1. It's going to be an idm hiphop soundclash and a damn good labor day weekend. 2. http://www.recordcamp.com Been really busy so the only new stuff can be found in the news section and the events. As always, if you'd like to contribute, just email us. 3. Other things to do this week a. Be certain to check out the premiere of the 24 Hour Party People movie at Landmark's Sunshine Theatre on Friday. If you don't know, it's a comedy about Factory Records, the label that brought you Joy Division, New Order, The Happy Mondays and my fav, A Certain Ratio. b. Monolake and Sonic Youth? Yes its true, this should be a very interesting afternoon at the Central Park summer stage. It's this Saturday at 3 and it's free. c. Aurther Baker and Mark Kamins @ Shelter After a delightful afternoon at the park you should go to shelter and check out this show, Baker and Kamins were mainstays in the mid 80's at the famous NYC danceclub Danceteria, expect some awesome dance music from that era of new wave, post punk and ol' school hip hop. d. Girls & Boys ok so I'm out of chronological order but you should check this party out on wednesday, static is over at filter 14 but Alex English persists with his new wave brit pop based party, expect to dance cuz it's legal there. 4. Records to get # The Warp Magic Bus tour Comp. This comp is awesome, I think it's the best thing warp's put out this year, too bad there's no vinyl of it. # The new Posthuman 12" Very good hard beats with a touch of D&B # Osymyso - Introspection I think this is the ultimate mashup record It's got every song you've ever heard, ever! all mashed up into this one schizo song. That's all for now, see you soon --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
