I've often wondered, how much mulla do U cats spin on music? Just looked at Sherburnes list of new new wave music and thought.....shit!.....these guys have to be either rich and musically stimulated to the max, or broke and musically stimulated to the max......despite that, how much do you shell out a month?

I work very hard at not knowing, lest I should realize that I probably need the regimen of shock therapy and antipsychotic meds which many people already suspect I need when they walk into my aparto and see what I have amassed. I sell on ebay not to get rid of what I don't like, but to feed my habit and keep the rent paid/lights on. If only I would stop *spending* the better portion of what I make on ebay AT ebay (as well as buying regularly from the usual suspects via mail order, GEMM and some "real world" [imagine that!] binning at Record Time, etc.), this might work a bit better. What I find is that when I do manage to cut a bit in one place, I tend to make it up and then some elsewhere. Although I'm sure it gets worse at points, my guess is that if I have dropped less than 600-700 in any given month, someone should check me for vital signs. If anything, I am erring on the conservative side with that estimate. The ebay thing, a few credit cards, two checking accounts and a wife who is wonderful and likes music as well all make it easily to live in blissful ignorance of an obvious addiction. If you want me to grab one of your categories below, I am broke and musically stimulated. You know how the American economy has been riding on a false bubble, speculating on future profits, shifting things around to make it look like things are rosier than they are? I understand that - only even with the spin, my situation doesn't look as great (hey - I'm in an apartment). Similarly, you can all show your patriotic allegiance with my state of affairs (and possibly thwart some terrorists) by bidding high and often on my ebay auctions :-) In the meantime, I am not going to sign any statements about my accounting practices. jeff ps while that was meant to be silly, sometimes some nice stuff goes for dirt on ebay. For every overbid rarity there are 100 decent deals waiting to be found. At 08:02 AM 7/27/2002, Omar Hackett wrote:

Unlike some others, I kept meticulous details on my record spending (quicken represent). Prior to going back to school: $500 on day to day purchases $150 on ebay/gemm/auction purchases -- for a total of $650 per month After going back to school: $25/month total for ebay and day to day. This does not include electronic music festivals/concerts/or promos. Since returning to college, I find myself relying more heavily on amazing friends, as well as P2P programs for good music. -mike On Sat, 27 Jul 2002, Omar Hackett wrote:

a : not enough b : too much! I tend to err toward a: although occasionally maybe go to b: on some months. most of the time it's an educated decision to buy something, sometimes I just guess and hope for the best. I got into Aphex Twin by guessing and it cost me a fortune. Rich

etc. And Jeff had good comments too. One thing I've heard is that a true sign of an addict is a person who makes little rules for themselves, thinking that if they can just follow these rules, they don't have a problem. In a conventional sense, think of these popular refrains- "I don't smoke unless I'm drinking", "I only smoke after work", "I don't drink until after 7pm", "I only drink on weekends", "I only drink beer" etc. etc. Back in California I was blowing about $200 a month on average. I'm in the military, and after taxes, that turns out to be about 15% of my income. Yeah. So I just decided not to buy anything P&C'd prior to 2000. No more backcatalogue collecting. That, and nothing I don't know about that just 'looks interesting' (that was tough). Also, no more CD comps with the one 'gotta have it tune' and a bunch of no-names (you know what I mean). Last month I changed it all around- from now on, no albums I haven't heard before, meaning I either buy something I hear somebody else playing that I really like, or I get (new) albums by people I see at live shows. So far it seems to work alright, at least until my next relapse. As you can see, I had/have quite a problem. May God grant me the serenity etc. etc. Tom P.S. For my next money-saving trick, I plan to stop drinking at bars. Right. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
