Dntel's (This is) The Dream of Evan and Chan EP has some of the most infectious idm records I've heard in a long time (if ever). Barbara Morgenstern's remix in which she duet's with the singer from Dntel is so beautiful, I can't even explain how gorgeous the combinations of the indie dntel vocals are with Barbara's distinct style, this is then followed by Superpitcher's Kompakt remix which transforms the song into a dancefloor friendly tech house pop song. The safety Scissors remix is pure glitch house. There's also a Lali Puna remix which applies a whole other perspective to the track. Props definitely go out to the plug research guys for putting out the perfect set of remixes. Word. I've been listening to this record a couple of times a day since it arrived a few days ago, and I have yet to get sick of it, which is a rare thing to say about a remix EP. It helps that the original track was one of my favourites on the album. But every remix on there is stellar, and none of them sound enough like the others to make it repetative. And the addition of new vocals (or in the case of the Safety Scissors track, rewiting the lyrics slightly and getting someone completely different to sing them) make it even better. Apparently the release has been delayed until Aug 20th, but when the date rolls around, everyone should be all over this. It's easily the single of the summer. i wanted so badly to love this release, but in the end it just didn't do it for me. i like it well enough and would even prefer it to a lot of other things coming out right now. if i had to guess at what the problem was i'd say that none of the remixers were fearless enough in their approach to handling the song. it's such a pretty and wonderful song as it is and it seems like people are kind of tiptoeing around it so as not to fling shit upon the mona lisa (how's that for hyperbole!?). i like superpitcher's mix but i find it strange that such a straight four to the floor remix can be somehow less dancey than the original staticy cacophonous resplendence of the track. also, the one original track on there is nowhere near up to snuff as far as dntel's usual standard goes. i've seen him live several times in the last few months and i can safely say that as new songs go, he's holding back BIG time. this one sounds like a really good song by Figurine (one of his other bands), interpret that as you will. also, i know i've heard that last lyric in another one of his songs, but i can't figure out which: 'the alarm has run and your week's begun' what's that from!? though 'this is the dream of evan and chan' has gotten me really excited about the postal service record that ben and jimmy are going to put out on sub pop... word is out that it'll be done pretty soon. gregory --- Greg Clow <greg@stainedproductions.com> wrote:

i got this yesterday as well. lied down at night to read some comics, popped it on... f-in great. nothing like a remix ep that doesn't make you sick of the origianl, but makes ya love it more. the safety scissors remix owns me right now. so joyous and playful ... almost like capitol k. i'm not very familiar with safety scissors work, can anyone recommend like minded material (or other) by him? in light, i'm revisiting LifeIsFullOfPossibilities today at work... this really is a damn good album... and i mean album, in the way it was meant to be used,... start to finish. good mix of idm sensibilities with indie emotions. any reports on their live show?

well, safety scissors' album "parts water" is fucking excellent... lots of reviews call it 80's sounding but to me that's lazy and i think that the dntel remix is pretty well indicative of what you're in for with safety scissors- bouncy vocal tech pop that manages to look at the future through an aged lens. he does all the vocals on his own stuff, but the vocals on the dntel remix feature the guy from kings of convenience whom i would probably not recommend, but perhaps that's just me. also, if you like the more playful aspect of of mr. scissors' stuff, you should check out the pigeon funk ep's. pigeon funk features a rotating lineup that has included/does include: sutekh, kit clayton, safety scissors and... felix kubin maybe? maybe i'm totally off on that. some of the safety scissors stuff does err more on the tech-house side of things the further back you go. other fun things i've heard lately-ish: dat politics- plugs plus goodiepal- narc beacon blectum from blechdom- tracks here and there fischerspooner- one track in particular, called 'the 15th' which i'm almost certain is a cover of a wire song. new wevie stonder album

dntel's live show is pretty incredible... stage presence-wise it's pretty typical for an idm show, though he does fiddle with a few more things than his laptop and there is a guitarist and sometimes jimmy sings (though he always mixes his voice way too low). the first time i saw him, my girlfriend and i just laid down on the floor at the venue... not that it was sleepy sounding, just very sensate... maybe i'm sounding a little freaky now though... the remix album just clicked with me tonight... i liked all the artists involved prior to hearing it but i think i went in with expectations too high... anyway, i like it now but i do wish that people had altered the song more... and as much as i love barbara morgenstern's voice on her own things, i wish she hadn't added her voice to her mix. anyway, gregory __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
