What does it matter to you? Completely unfamiliar with the giddy experience of having something before everyone else? Anyway, I somehow managed to get a hold of a promo of the DVD and I'd have to see the video is a pretty cool visual translation of the track. Grantz Graf is definitely my least favorite of the tracks on the new EP so I really would have much rather seen either of the other two made into videos. Still, its a pretty mind blowing video that gives the track a deeper dimension. Its pretty nutty though. We watched it at the end of a long night and I felt like I was going to just fall over backwards when it ended. Someone ought to write some kind of modular/very customizable real-time 3D graphics software specifically for working with/reacting to music. It'd be great if there were some good tools to recreate something kind of like the Grantz Graf video in real-time at a show. Is there any kind of thing like this out there yet? -Aaron

you have the choice of not acting wisely. if you wanna have stuff before everyone else, go for it, it's just kindof immature to me... and it's always better to get the stuff with the package. mp3 or avi is not the same. i guess this topic has been discussed a lot in here hasn't it? concerning the video i don't think it's worth the download with a 56k modem, cause when you'll get it with its shitty quality it'll be time to buy the official release. watched it again last night... the more i watch it the less i like it :( i did find it mind blowing the first time i watched it but i guess there could've been some way better results with some other tracks (it's my least fave on the ep too)... maybe i'm beeing too subjective... /yann --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Hey there... Seems like the obvious choices for Autechre would be either nato for max/msp, or pd/gem. I've not used nato, but I'm fairly sure there are OpenGL modules for it, which would facilitate hardware accelerated live 3d graphics. I presume a considerable amount of render time went into the ganz graf video, so it would be unrealistic to expect the same results in a live situation. Should be able to get some interesting results that compliment their music nicely though. I've never been lucky enough to see Ae live. What sort of visual show (if any) can be expected from one of their gigs? ps. Nice to meet you all... I've been lurking for a few weeks now... Now seemed like a good time to say hello :) catchya later... Richard

Agreed; it is funny how many people see or hear something so meticulously put together, and then say "wow, I want to do that live with a few buttons," not realizing that it's all put together in little bits over many many hours/days.

none; they've historically wanted shows as dark as possible. I don't think they've ever come right out and said "don't watch us" but that's about what they would *like.* The only visuals are their heads bobbing behind some computers and other gear (usually a nord mod key and a sherman filterbank) derek ------- eggytoast.com ------- with lather thingy --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I saw them live in Chicago once. There was no show. They turned the lights off. Compared to the previous acts, Autechre seemed very elegant. Personally, I think their aesthetic is far superior to the gimmicks some other electonic artists have resorted to in order to seem techy and futuristic. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I've seen autechre a couple of times, without visual aids. I think they prefer that. I think they like pitting the audience in the middle of their sound, because the sound is the visual at a show where the music is that big, where the music is the place, where the music is what they want you to see. While I would watch and appreciate their visuals, and I am sure they would come up with something cool if they decided to, I think there is something about a lack of visual that they are trying to do, and that makes perfect sense. Like to stick you in your head and let your own visuals conjure themselves inspired by those mad vibrations. b -----Original Message----- From: Richard Gray [mailto:hummer@crash.net.nz] Sent: Monday, July 22, 2002 1:17 PM To: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [idm] Re: Ae gantz graf dvd Hey there... Has anyone seen the latest Tool show? They use a lot of pre-rendered video and lighting that is very tightly integrated with the live music. It's pretty impressive. --kev/entitee http://www.entitee.com/dnb on 7/22/02 1:22 PM, Bryan Finoki at finoki@lucasarts.com wrote:

Wow!! Thanks for mentioning this, as I hadn't heard of it before. I've done work with visuals at parties and live shows before, so this is most interesting to me.... The list of features is incredible... If they can pull it off in a fast, stable (of utmost importance in a live situation) package, then it could be somewhat of a killer app for live video. It's very reasonably priced too... So much for nato..... Here's the link if anyone else is interested... http://www.cycling74.com/products/jitter.html Catchya Later, Richard

I saw Kit Clayton demonstrate this at Sonar i Barcelona, and I was very impressed. I've been developing similar-ish software with at couple of friends, and Jitter was pretty much what we originally envisioned for our software. It turned out different though, mainly to keep the framerate up. The problem (I think) with Jitter is that it's so ultra-modular and scalable, that it must have an impact on speed. I haven't tried Jitter myself, but based on my own experience it seems that the more scalable, the slower, but this is of course only a problem for realtime live stuff, when rendering to a file it hardly matters. Anyway, I'm also looking very much forward to Jitter, might have to buy myself a Mac. -Stefan (www.effekts.dk) Richard Gray wrote:
