Is our scene "thriving"? I REALLY don't want to sound troll-ish, but I don't think it is. It's obvious that there is and will always be great new music out there that's really pushing new boundaries, but as a scene don't you think things are sort of stagnant right now? Few labels sell enough to make money, the "IDM" shows don't seem to be multilying, and collectively we get little to no press. What does the list think? What can we do about it? I'm trying to educate as much as possible here in NYC, but is that enough? Curious to hear replies. I wouldn't say thriving, but existing. My opinion is that "IDM" isn't really a scene, and its kind of a problem to look at things that way. Its a group of internet nerds, and various individuals who buy CDs in a vaccume in the real world. At least in my experience. The fact that IDM doesn't really refer to one kind of thing, and in fact refers to things that may be somewhat opposite in terms of texture or sensibility, makes it a hard banner to unite under. That and the fact that it comes off as very pretentious to alot of the potential audience. Musically, i think there's more than enough good stuff coming out to constitute a scene as, or more vital than most other scenes, theres a decent number of local and regional acts that are worth seeing, but there's really nothing cohesive that connects them. Money is a whole different issue that i don't know how to discuss in relationship to "IDM". I run a distro, but its mostly a few dedicated individuals that buy from me...most of the time when i talk to people into even more mailstream forms of electronic music, they have some interest, but they only spend $'s on something they either know they'll get booked to dj. I definitely try to push newer things on people, either by putting on cheap shows, mixing more experimental and popular styles, giving out free mix cds, etc but for the most part people are afraid of things that might be labeled experimental... - cutups --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
