hey all, So, i guess that Warp US tour that was just announced isn't going to a whole bunch of places, for sure, but it's no wonder, if the replies on the list are anything to go by. There's been, like, eight people loudly proclaiming 'i hate you why aren't you coming here by the way you were crap last time you came anyhow why do you bother?' How about 'thanks for bothering to put together a tour at all, Warp. we don't get many good European artist concerts in the States.'? And no, I'm not in one of the cities it's going to. On a slightly different note, here's a paste of Mike Paradinas (Planet Mu label-boss)'s planet-mu.com messageboard post about how well Planet Mu CDs sell. -- It's up to the artists, I don't want to publish exact sales figures if they'd rather keep it secret. But on average this year (last 12 months) cd albums have sold 800 copies. Our best seller in last 12 months was The Cosmic Forces Of Mu which sold 2217 copies worldwide. just over 12 months ago the Slag Boom remixes cd did very well at almost 3000 copies. The average earnings of a Planet Mu artist (from sales royalties, not their real jobs obviously) is ?800 per album ($1190) which is the royalties on 1000 sales. But I usually give them an advance of more than that. -- [end of paste] Quite honestly, since I'd consider Mu to be in the top three most well-known 'idm'-ish labels in the world right now, it's pretty tragic. Internet piracy to blame? Well, there was an interesting article by Moby (of all people!) on his personal site which talked about his views on that type of thing (not Planet Mu specifically - just piracy!.) It basically went - even if there _are_ a lot of people who don't pirate music, sales will be depressed in any genre which has a lot of tech-savvy listeners, simply because a certain percentage of people who understand how to pirate will pirate. I know the idm-scene right now is thriving on the Net and collaboration - just seems a shame that the best artists on Planet Mu like Venetian Snares sell about a fifth as many as some below-average skanky SoCal punk band, or what have you (pick another example if you're offended by that one!) ohwell, there's a solutionless rant if ever i saw one :) regards, h0l! Why would we say that if we're not going to get to see them, because they're booking fees are too high to get booked in our cities? Makes no sense. There are plenty of artists who are have more reasonable fees that do some to these cities, and i give them the mad props. I've seen plenty of artists who've come from europe and are still about the DIY enough to stop in smaller cities. That aside though: I understand the costs related to coming from the UK, etc are high, i'd never slight somebody for doing what they need to break even, or even make a living. Not to mention the fact that alot of this music just isn't that popular over here to be able to book decent shows everywhere. But I look at it like, if you're over here, why not do more dates rather than less? - cutups --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

it's an interesting point brought up here, and yes, those figures are rather depressing as i think more people ought to be into what mike's releasing... but then again, i can understand. IDM is all of what?? hardly ten years old?? punk rock is 25 years old. i really feel that the genre has a lot of room to grow, and needs a lot of time to do so. the genre has still barely even broken into the states. i figure in another ten years, those figures will triple without any problems. it's also a good point that there's really only ONE big label that's mostly IDM (warp). after that there's a huge gap in the amount of promotion/sales/etc... i think mu, cco, morr, and schematic are probably the big ones after that... so warp presses 50,000 - 100,000 copies, and then it drops to 3,000 - 4,000 ?? give it time is all i can say... we're just getting started. mick. acre. ----- Original Message ----- From: "h0l -" <h0l211@hotmail.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Monday, June 24, 2002 5:02 PM Subject: [idm] grumpy warp tour curmudgeons + planet mu sales figures.
