Yeah, I hate it too. I really wish I could have done more than 300 professionally duped CD-Rs for my label's first release, but there's the little problem of money. I didn't have enough of it to do a bigger production, hence we have a limited edition run of 300. Now, how do you as a consumer somehow feel cheated? I see two scenarios: -you buy the release, and the fact that it's "limited edition" either appeals to your IDM ego, or you could care less because you're only interested in the music -you'd like to buy the release but can't because it's sold out. maybe the label who's invested all the time, money, and resources into the release will make more (since, after all, the first limited-edition pressing sold out, right?). In that case, you're in luck. If they don't press more, how do you really have a right to complain? What investment have you made in that small label to justify being angry with their lack of resources? Becoz of stupid ideas as the one you do write here, most of the independant CD industry is getting done ! Do you know how many labels have gone bankrupcy recently, how most of the labels we do like are experiencing such difficulties they are limiting their next releases? LIMITED is only a word and a number. Most of CD releases I'm buying are 500, 1000 even 2000 copies. No number on it but this is quite limited number for artists willing to produce music and live on their practice. If we may do today more and more limited editions, it' s fuck not for the rarety of it BUT because we do like to produce the music of relatives and friends, but stupid people do prefer the shit of MP3s instead to support a network of music activities which goes from composers getting label supportin composition, live gigs and releases production . Then a number is a number. I've been producing Cds last years which are for most still at home. The CD company I do work with will soon produce Cds only over a 500 copies. With Cdr series, I can produce the right amount I do want and I do get rid of most of them. No money is made, but the object exist, the music is spread out, and musicians do own a finished project to ask for fundings and gigs. few years back, Atom Heart produced on DEl Haze entertainment a LIMITED edition CD of 1 copie ONLY. First frustrated, I then imagine the guy holding it, and it remained me of all these freaks buying contemporary art paintings for.... Why not ? Everything brings its opposite. The so-called democratization of the Internet is destroying an independant industry that will have to develop new ways to exist. Continue to rip off Cds, load them on the web, listen to live gig through miserable real player, and then do complaint about no good music coming out, no live gigs in your stupid town anymore ! As much as I agree with both of you, Eric and Peter, one that want a very limited CD, one that distribute/manufacture one, I think that such releases should not be announced on a list like this ... It creates frustrations on both part... Trust me, I've had my share of frustration trying to find limited releases over the years ( fax and elektrolux labels are known to be quite limited ) As much as I hate it, I have to agree with Eric when he comparing limited CD's to limited prints of an engraving ... A friend of mine is an artist, a painter, and sometimes he makes engravings ( eau fortes ) , and he only makes a few of them, and he doesn't sell them all ... and if he does sell them all and you want one, too bad, ... maybe in the future, he make another series .... I think that in some situations, CD's should be considered as art objects and not as a commercial objects ( not the rights words, but close to it ). You want a painting of a known artist, pay for it, or simply get a lesser quality poster, or a fake ( that you can't really show anyway ... ). Anyway ... the point I'm trying to make is that very limited edition CD's should not be advertised on a public mailing list ... and one must not make the assumptions that one can get all the CD's released everywhere and everytime ...
