Just ordered this today from Skimo ISAN: Clockwork Menagerie CD (MORR MUSIC) $15.50 ISAN: Clockwork Menagerie LP (MORR MUSIC) $11.50 "This compilation of early material coming from long-out-of-print singles and compilations was a long time coming. Mostly because there should be many more people out there who should be able to listen to these tracks than those lucky few who were able to get the original copies in the short while they were available. These tunes seem to come from a different era when small labels like earworm, liquefaction empire, bad jazz or wurlitzer jukebox were continually presenting interesting and exciting new bands, mostly on neatly packaged limited edition 7"s. The music ranges, depending on from out of whose vintage analogue equipment it comes, between simple melodies on swinging, feather-weight beats and rhythmically complex and transparent sound installations. May this be the right balance between pop and art. Maybe like an unlikely mixture of Plone and Seefeel." also, if you can track down the "digitalis" 12" on liquefaction empire, definitely pick it up. it's a personal favorite of mine. as far as everything else goes - "lucky cat" is the absolutely essential isan album. it's a truly beautiful - delicate, ambient and wistful. and that clockwork menagarie comp will be an excellent introduction to their exceedingly rare backcatalouge. they're only alike in their love of analog synths, but solvent sometimes reminds me of isan in the sense that they both have that wistful, longing quality in a lot of their music. solvent's obviously a lot more up tempo though. benge also makes purely analog electronic music. i can't speak for all his releases, but i like "beautiful electronic music" well enough, despite the pretentious title. i guess cause perhaps it's not pretentious when you actually pull it off. i wish more idm heads were making pure analog music as good as the output by isan. now if they would only come and play a show in america. hope that helped. - d ----- Original Message ----- From: StaticBeats <idm-list@staticbeats.com> To: Jason Stickel <j_stickel_otfp@hotmail.com> Cc: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Monday, June 10, 2002 3:34 PM Subject: Re: [idm] ISAN???

I second that suggestion. There's one track in particular which starts off one of the sides which is just breathtaking (sorry forget the name at the moment)... Really luscious and unhurried in their love of analog. A little hyped, but justly so. Although, if folks are trying to track down the liquification vinyl, they'll probably have no luck. It was re-released on Darla on CD a year or two ago. I have to say I'm chuffed for their latest release, I have fallen out of my 12" and 7" IDM habit since Other Music went away. Should be some good pickins. Hello Jason, ISAN are great. You should also listen to Melodium. Last month he released a nice album on [Peter I'm Flying] label (http://www.peterimflying.fr.st/). He did also an 7" on Static Caravan (http://www.staticcaravan.com/) and Active Suspension (http://www.activesuspension.org/). This is very sweet and fragile electronica, nice little sounds, sometimes melancholic. You can also try Borko on label Resonant which is a guy from Múm, and e*vax on Audio Dregs (http://www.audiodregs.com/artists/evax.html). -- http://plicploc.org/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
