interesting thread.. although i completely disagree with the comments that everyone is making the same style of dnb nowadays. surely to prove that theory wrong all you have to do is listen to some of it! i find the popular skittery techno dnb pretty boring (bc, konflict and the like) and sure a lot of this is being made but there are the other styles people have mentioned: -the minimal teebee / polar style (which sounds like a new take on photek's style to me) -paradox' crazy beat construction (he's got his own category) -rave shit (total science and the like) -digital is the king of dubby drum & bass... check out session on function records http://lowerdepths.orcon.net.nz/function.html.. you can check out his dubzilla album there too -there's also equinox by subversive on true intent that sounds like basic channel that's all, dave ===== --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I love(d) d'n'b, but must confess I don't hear anything lively within its nowadays. However its progeny in particular broken beat fascinates (Likwid Biskit, Seiji, et al). Also, my particular fascination is for the improvisors who have, rather late (c'97 onwards), been infected by the breakbeat virus, stand up: - Erik Truffaz (The Mask, Mantis) - Nils Petter Molvaer (live, can't bear Manfred Eicher's productions on the studio releases) - Rhys Chatham (Hard Edge) - Graham Haynes (dnb, Wagner) (all trumpeters, Miles casts a long shadow) Thanks for the pointer to The Bays, have to give them a listen also. All the best, Colin. np Jon Hassell, '86 Illinois Park. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Yeah I was pretty bored with what was coming out, although I recently heard the Mutationz double pack on DSC14, Trace's label and it is fucking SICK. It is all remixes of the old Trace Mutant track. The Kemal and Stakka and Skynet remixes are off the fucking hook, really got me excited about new drum and bass again. SOZISM.SHT

I saw Truffaz at the Knitting Factory in NY a couple of weeks ago and I have to say a couple of the tracks they were doing were pretty fucking wicked. I am pretty sceptical of the whole 'let's-appropriate-youth-culture-to-make-our-same-old-shit-exciting' phenomenon (see david bowie, et al) however the drummer and bassist in Truffaz' Electric Ladyland Quartet were really fucking amazing. The drummer going by the name Captain Planet was just really fucking mind blowing and on top of it. He has this routine where he beatboxes through a megaphone with a delay strapped to it, looping beats, that was just totally thrilling and during the bassist's solo the bassist did a similar thing of banging out beats on the body of his upright and loopin them through a delay and playing bass over them, really wicked. Cant say too much for Truffaz himself but that band is serious fat shit, highly reccomended if you get a chance to catch them live. SOZISM.SHT

I've caught Truffaz twice, once with the Ladyland band and once with his previous group (which is best heard on The Mask compilation) - both drummers are amazing, though I particularly loved Marc Erbetta and Patrick Muller (who played his Fender Rhodes through a wah pedal, sigh). There's something about live breakbeat that I love. I know what you mean about appropriation, but Truffaz does it organically. People who fail at this are people like Tim Hagans (Animation/Imagination). 3 weeks time and Truffaz plays here in London. SOZISM.SHT - what did you think of the guitarist? All the best, Colin.
