east dev is finally here! we are now taking pre-orders on dabrye "instrmntl" (eastern developments). we are also talking pre-orders on the reissue of delarosa+asora's "crush the sight-seers" (pearineel). both are available in the hefty records online store... https://www.heftyrecords.com/store if you haven't already heard, eastern developments is an upstart label co-founded by scott herren (prefuse 73, savath+savalas) and respected designer, peter rentz (estro/tent). the hype machine can now rest as the final products are ready for consumption. dabrye's "instrmntl" comes from critically acclaimed producer, tadd mullinix. somewhere between broken detroit techno and D-town's jay dee (aka j dilla), he comes correct with a playful, chilled out, hip hop summer classic. dabrye's debut, "one/three" came in 2001 for ghostly international (also available in the hefty store). it was this record that caught the attention of herren and rentz. You know, __please__ peter-acre don't take this personally, this is a message for the whole list, but I HATE seeing reviews like this. There is NOTHING here about what the 12" is like and why it might be "INCREDIBLE". It may well be brilliant, but what happens is that I'm left with a vague impression that there's something special about this release, but no real content for me to make up my own mind. Some of the time then, when I'm doing a big international order, I'll go "oh that's meant to be good" and waste money on something which just isn't my style at all. In this case, I'll probably love the Dabyre. But there was, for instance, a spate of Freeform reviews a few years ago going on about how brilliant her was, and whenever I listened it sounded like that "funky house" shit I hate... I'd really appreciate that if people are going to come out and comment on some release they really like, they'd maybe just _try_ and explain what's so good about it, and give us a few points of comparison... Please? Cheers, Peter PS Something that annoys me potentially even more is the level of "creative writing" one might say in the press releases or label-written blurbs we read on the bentcrayon/skimo/forcedexposure releases lists these days. There's similarly so little information given about what the _music_ actually sounds like half the time. you're 100% right. allow me to elaborate on why this is such an increidble record and what it's like: this is instrumental hip-hop at its' best. choice samples, good groove, and thick sounds. the first track is a little intro biut with some jazzy samples and a nice beat, only about a minute long. things start to pick up with the second track, really dirty/mean bassline. amazing flow. and the right amount of variation to keep you from getting bored. some beautiful flute samples kick in right at the end add the perfect touch. the third track is one of my favorites. a bit of an older hip hop feel at first (even cowbells make an appearance), but the bassline in this track is GREAT. just really odd and unique. rather minimal, but works really well. next track has really light beats, a nice bassline and jazz piano. next up is another jazzy bit. wonderful flow on this one. next is definately my favorite. it's got the east coast independant hip-hop sound that i love. you could hear the soulquarians coming up with something like this (this would be a perfect track for a common record or taleb kweli). to continue... an odd track here. chanting vocals, i'm not sure how to describe this. for some reason, the movie "stand by me" comes to mind. i'm sure that doesn't make any sense though. mashall law follows this track with 8bit sounding synths and a bit lighter on the drums. take me home ends the record with more jazzy samples, slide bass some hiss and hum. only a couple minutes long. anyhow, i'm not the best at describing records, but you're right... something more than "this is GREAT... the end" is an order. fans of prefuse73, the roots, taleb kweli etc will enjoy this. as i said, instrumental hip-hop, at its' best. hope this helps. peter acre ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peter Hollo" <raven@fourplay.com.au> To: "idm list" <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Monday, May 27, 2002 7:04 PM Subject: [idm] Re: HEFTY!!
