so, Fennesz did infact perform this "Mahler21"-thing last night,... which
was inspired by Mahler's work, but didn't appear to necessarily sample from
it.
it took place in an intimate, nice minimally designed basement gallery, red
lights. about 40 people sitting on the floor facing Fennesz.
i wasn't sure what to expect (can you ever in regards to laptopia?), but was
honestly blown away. maybe it was the fact that i hadn't eaten dinner and
my stomach was gargling the complimentary white wine, maybe it was the sushi
i had for lunch, but i was legitimately fucked-up by this set. about 45
mins, non-stop, endlessly pulling in layer after layer. but always keeping
it underwraps, always between 3 and 4 distinct layers. sweeping,
oddly-sentimental, i dont know what it is about his work, but it has such a
distinct sound and nostalgia to it. and live, his sense of the space and
the sound was extraordinary. he knows how to vibrate the inside of your
ears, or tickle your spine. leaning against the wall, it vibrated calm.
big nyc-props to the vienna sausage.
