MUTEK 2002: An exciting and eclectic event!
Montreal, May 8, 2002 - MUTEK is back this year with a third edition
that is more exciting than ever! In only two years, MUTEK has built itself a
solid reputation thanks to an audacious program that reflects the most
innovative trends in the field of electronic music. This 2002 edition
proudly perseveres with the mission on which MUTEK was founded, bringing
together virtuosos from around the world and the most promising
representatives of the Canadian scene, to present once again a rich panorama
of musical creation in the era of digital technologies. From May 29 to June
2, 2002, more than 50 artists from over 10 countries will perform on three
stages, providing an unforgettable trajectory of experimentation and
discovery.
MUTEK's program involves five days of concerts and performances,
with five principal programs in the evening, two late night events and the
daytime Emergence series, presented by du Maurier Arts, to which admission
is mostly free. These activities will take place in three venues: the
Fellini room at Ex-Centris, the Société des arts technologiques (SAT) and
Metropolis - each venue will be specially arranged in order to ensure
optimal acoustics and to preserve the quality and conviviality for which the
event is known. MUTEK is also exploring new directions with a series of
conferences to be held at the Goethe Institute, and a selection of films and
videos about music and sound creation to be shown at Cinéma Parallele.
One journey, five stopovers
The starting point is made of rhythmic textures and cutouts, and
will take place Wednesday, May 29 at the Ex-Centris complex (8:30 pm, 3536
St. Laurent Blvd.), featuring the sights and refined sounds of British duo
SND, as well as the fused sound/image offerings of Radboud Mens and Bas van
Koolwijk from the Netherlands. Canadian artists vitaminsforyou and dioxyde
will complete an evening dedicated to microscopic sounds, clicks 'n' cuts
and synchronized visual interpretation. The public is then invited to SAT
(11:00 pm, 305 St. Catherine St. W) to take part in a ceremony of psycho-pop
and retro-futurism led by the delirious Felix Kubin, along with his
colleague Nova Huta and Toronto's hellothisisalex.
On Thursday, May 30 at Ex-Centris (8:30 pm), four artists bring us
an immersion into architectural and abstract sonic spaces. Montreal's Helen
of Troy and Ghislain Poirier will offer up the fruits of their own work and
sensibilities. Germany's Stephan Mathieu will present his project, Sad Mac
Studies; an audiovisual work composed of sounds taken from the world of pop
music. Then, British musician Janek Schaefer will use his custom-designed
two-armed turntable to manipulate altered vinyl to bring out a wave of sonic
textures, pulses and frequencies. Fans of current IDM will want to make
their way later to SAT (11:00 pm) to hear rare performances given by
representatives of the Skam label: Bola and Gescom (a satellite project of
Autechre), introduced by Toronto's Solvent and Lowfish.
The voyage continues on Friday, May 31 at Metropolis (9:00 pm, 59
St. Catherine St. W), which transforms itself into a giant electronic
cabaret for a night that will be explosive and emotional. The program begins
with Toronto duo Repair, accompanied by singer Dawn Lewis, setting the stage
for France's Cabanne and Ark, with the funky house of their Copacabannark
project. MUTEK then proudly welcomes Radio Boy in an exclusive Canadian
appearance, a performance in which British artist Matthew Herbert manifests
his aversion to globalization by destroying multinational brand products
onstage and creating music on the spot with the sounds he has sampled.
Akufen, rising star on the local scene while enjoying an enviable reputation
internationally, will use the occasion to release his new album. Finally,
iconoclastic Swedish producer Hakan Lidbo will end this wild night,
presented by ICI Montréal/Montreal Mirror.
The rhythm picks up on Saturday, June 1 with a second night at
Metropolis (9:00 pm). Beginning with the experiments of British Columbia
composer/programmer Ben Nevile, the program then shines the spotlight on the
original and intelligent vision of Germany's Klang/Playhouse labels, which
combine the pleasures of dancing with refined musicality. In the line-up are
Farben (Jan Jelinek) with his hypnotic and languid house, the intense soul
and funky energy of Losoul and the sophisticated rhythmic constructions of
the amazing Ricardo Villalobos. Finland's Luomo (a.k.a. Vladislav Delay)
will finish off the program in magical style with his disco-dub-house
anthems.
On Sunday, June 2 at SAT (9:00 pm), MUTEK 2002 finishes things off
with a night of Latin-influenced music, featuring one of the most prolific
and prodigious experimenters of the post-techno era: Germany's Atom Heart.
Currently a voluntary exile in Chile, and famous for his ironic
conceptualizations (he's the real Senor Coconut!) and impressive list of
pseudonyms, tonight as Atom(tm) he performs material from among other
sources, his new album, Geeez'n'Gosh. Joining him will be Mexico's Murcof,
Argentine Juan Self and Chile's Dandy Jack. The night will climax as Atom
Heart, Dandy Jack and Ricardo Villalobos get busy with a scorching
jam-session.
Emerging practices
The Emergence series, presented by du Maurier Arts, is an
opportunity to survey the latest practices and experimentation made possible
by digital tools. Taking place in the afternoon at SAT, these activities
also facilitate an exchange between the artists and the audience.
The first two programs in the Emergence series focus on the Montreal
experimental scene. On Thursday, May 30 (5:00 pm), Deadbeat (in Montreal)
and Monolake (in Berlin) will take part in a transatlantic, improvisational
webjam. Alexandre Burton, Zack Settel and Dull_Drv will follow up by
demonstrating what is possible with the latest compositional tools. The
artists' movements will be projected onto a giant screen, enabling the
audience to watch and comprehend the creative process and the evolution of
the sound. The following day, on Friday, May 31 (5:00 pm), Xenofonex,
Capsule, Camp and Vromb will take us on a journey through varying sonic
landscapes.
The series culminates on Saturday, June 1 (2:00 pm) with a showcase
of talent from Kit Clayton's label, Orthlorng Musork. This program,
presented in collaboration with XLR8R, rounds up parallel musical universes
with Stephan Mathieu and his Full Swing project, Timeblind and AGF (Antye
Greie Fuchs of the duo Laub), who will later perform with Vladislav Delay in
a rare presentation of their AGF/DLAY project.
The Emergence series comes to a close on Sunday, June 2 (5:00 pm)
with a program that highlights the links between Toronto's minimal techno
with the Montreal scene, featuring Jay Hunsberger, Mike Shannon and Pan/Tone
of the Cynosure/Revolver label.
