Hey Folks, I am going to be heading to toronto for 5 days in less than a month and I was wondering if anyone can furnish me with some cool record shops to visit. I'm definitely looking for some good used shops with tons of vinyl as well as new stuff. An assortment would be appreciated. And if anyone has any worthwhile things I should do, please pass those along as well. Thanks, Michael --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Hey.. I'm a Toronto ex-pat. vinyl metropolis @ queen / spadina.. wide variety of stuff. Phonics seems to keep them pretty well stocked on the German minimal tip. Kind of diverse selection with lots of filler to wade through though. play de record on young. Toronto vinyl mecca. I don't like the store much and rarely shopped there. They do have a variety of material but everything seems to be "DJ's gigging out" geared and very little (at all) experimental stuff. If you want anything more obtuse than John Tejada records this store ain't for you.. Record Peddler on Queen is a great store. Indie rock was their primary forte but they got some in the know buyers onboard and what started out as a good place to score Chain Reactionesque material turned into one of Toronto's best leftfield record stores. Also worth noting is the uncanny resemblance between the attitudes of some members of this record stores staff and that of some of the characters in High Fidelity. Kopps Vortex and Penguin on Queen also have lots of good stuff. The staff at Penguin is the best in the city. Some places you may want to check out while you are in TO are the design exchange, Toronto's lifeless take on times square (for comic purposes), and the restaurants saving grace and azule. The worlds best whole in the wall bar is in TO - it's called souzdal and it's on college. As for events.. check out http://www.techno.ca/clonk , http://www.wabi.org , and http://www.stainedproductions.com/ cheers, ~g -- Greg Smith http://www.laiad.com "There is no such thing as a perfectly accurate clock. Record Peddler closed last year sometime - although your description sounds a bit more like Rotate This, which you didn't mention elsewhere. Is that the place you meant?

I think every city has a record store with a staff like the one in High Fidelity. :)

Thanks for the mention, Greg - Clonk & Wabi are great company to be included in. I also maintain a fairly up to date list of upcoming electronic/experimental/etc. events in Toronto at http://www.feedbackmonitor.com/live.htm and my wife runs the website http://www.toronto-underground.com which lists hundreds of independent shops, restaurants and such in downtown Toronto.
